Articles on School Busing / Desegregation

December 1978

November 24, 1982

The 1978 article states involuntary desegregation  will occur in 1980.  This NEVER happened in Philadelphia.  We found there was always institutional resistance to involuntary desegregation.

In the second article, it states a school must be "40% black and 25% white to be considered desegregated."  The article claimed Northeast qualifies.  Today, Northeast still does not qualify if the percentages are correct.

       African American Leadership

June 7, 1977
We were told by Ms. Harrell and Ms. Pavalko this was a controversial election.  Mr. Caston was first denied his victory.  It is interesting there is nothing about the controversy and the picture appears on page 2 (out of 4) versus the front page.  There was no article to accompany the photo and caption.

December 20, 1978

The article includes the variety of activities sponsored by the Black Cultural Society.  In the late 1970s, Northeast also had  Hewbrew and Korean Cultural Societies.  We didn't find any articles on other cultural groups.

Articles on African American                     History Month Programs

We don't know when an annual  African American cultural aseembly began but the 1976 event was the most controvercial.  Though there isn't controvercy described during the 1983 event, the photo (see below) "is worth a 1000 words."  The articles list what was included in each assembly and quotes some participants as well as the staff sponsor.  We don't know if other cultural groups had assemblies.

                                                   April 6, 1976
Ms. Harrell and Ms. Pavalko told us about this "riot."   They told us the origins of the "riot" were disputed.  They said some people blamed it on relationship fights.   They also told us the Philadelphia Mounted Police  surrounded the school.  They thought there was too much police response.
The article  states it was reported the controversy was in response to a speech and the Black National Anthem.   The Black Culture Society disagreed.  They blamed it on "prejudiced attitudes of some whites in Northeast."

Photo from "Black History Month" Assembly held March 25, 1983
(see article June 3, 1983)
Students were asked to stand for the Black National Anthem.
According to the caption, "everyone stood."  Obviously, based on the photo, most white students, and a few African American students, did not stand.

                   diversity of student body

Northeast continues to be a ethnically diverse school.  Today, there are over 50 languages spoken by Northeast students.

         Magnet Program

Magnet programs were established in schools to created desegregated schools.  Northeast's magnet program was founded in 1962-1963 as SPARC (space / science program).  It was apparently expanded in 1978.
