Title: RedJack - Revenge of the Brethren
Rating: Teen
Captains Advisory: Animated gore, mild language, violence
Synopsis: Seventeen years ago, the dreaded pirate RedJack was betrayed to his death. Now, the remaining members of his crew are being hunted down by assassins and their next target is a young teenager named Nicholas Dove, a boy whose past is somehow linked to the pirate lord who died the very day he was born.
Advantages:
Disadvantages: The Lava Lake and fire-spitting tiki torches are murder to defeat..but the Kraken scene is great fun to watch!
The Verdict: Assassins, eccentric shipmates, ghost pirates, and a one-eyed voodoo priestess who looks like she could be Tia Dalmas grandmother! What more could a matey ask for?
Title: Pirates of the Caribbean
Rating: Teen
Captains Advisory: Violence
Synopsis: The pirate captain Nathaniel Hawk has always loved the freedom of the sea..until the day his ship was pressed into service under the English Governor Robert Silehard due to a lack of available ships to combat the French who are encroaching upon the Crowns territories. Treachery is everywhere. Loyal allies and savage enemies spring up from the most unlikely places, the whispers of a cursed chest and a ship known only as the Black Pearl draw him deeper into adventures he never dreamed of.
Advantages:
Disadvantages: The most unfortunate disadvantage of the game is that, while the Black Pearl is a part of the story and Kiera Knightly narrates a small portion of the beginning, beloved characters such as Captain Hector Barbossa, Captain Jack Sparrow and Will Turner are painfully absent, leaving the player to wonder whether the designers fell asleep at the storyboarding sessions. Higher level weapons are ridiculously difficult to acquire without having to either pay a kings ransom in gold for it or restart your game multiple times with various henchmen to be slaughtered in the caves/shores/catacombs by undead pirates on the way in and out.
The annoying, blonde and supermodel-skinny French pirate captain Danielle Green, apparently a former old flame of the games protagonist, is nauseatingly clich in appearance as well as demeanor. Running around in high heeled boots with ones bosom practically falling out of their shirt and sporting pants tight enough to cut off the circulation in their legs is not conductive to being a successful, awe-inspiring buccaneer.
Did I mention those pesky undead skeleton monkeys whose poisonous bite can kill you or your henchman instantaneously? Hmm, forgot that..
The Verdict: All in all, a rousing, swashbuckling little gem on its own for any pirate gamer. Rather disappointing for some Pirates of the Caribbean fans.
Title: Age of Sail II Privateers Bounty
Rating: Everyone
Captains Advisory: Nothing objectionable
Synopsis:
Advantages:
Disadvantages: Quite humiliating to watch as your beautiful fleets well-strategized battle tactics are sent down to Davey Jones locker by the computer-controlled enemy fleets that often seem to be nigh unstoppable.
The Verdict: A brilliantly designed game for die-hard battle simulation players.
Title: Tropico 2 - Pirate Cove
Captains Advisory: Violence and suggestive themes
Synopsis:
Advantages:
Disadvantages: Having your pirates whine about the lack of available courtesans for the hundredth time is maddening, especially if theres a large-scale captive revolt in progress.
The Verdict: Highly addictive and full of piratical frivolity!
