PREFACE

Electric traction is now the main prime mover of railway transportation all over the world. As on date there are over 3,000 electric locomotives on Indian Railways. Wheels are essential and high value component of electric locomotives. Over six thousands wheel are consumed on Indian Railways annually. The cost of rediscing of these wheels is over thirty crores. Proper attention of wheel can minimise of the cost of maintenance of these costly assets as well as make better availability of electric locomotives.

This booklet analyses the reasons of rapid wheel wear and suggests possible actions to minimise it and increase the wheel life. It is expected that the wheel life could be extended up to around eight years. Thus proper implementations of this report can save up to about many crores per annum alongwith saving of manpower and electric power as well as making better availability of electric locomotives.

Though every possible care has been taken to make it perfect, however suggestions are welcome to improve it.
