coming soon: reviews

alright-so i decided that i needed to having something on my web page that reflected what i've spent a great deal of my life doing-and that's watching films...i love them...i've seen way too many, and i've seen most of them more than once...now, as far as i'm concerned, there are two kinds of people: those who watch movies from time to time, and never watch something they've already seen, and those who are like me...who have a favorite, say 100 films, and who watch them over and over until the tape breaks...it's a bit sad, i realize, but i like to tell myself i'm cultured, and just in to film...(of course, substituting the word "film" for "movie" makes me seem like more of a student than a pop-culture whore)...

so-here are some lists (separated in to categories cuz i'm like that) of films that i've seen, and would see again...if i've taken the time to list it, that means i really enjoyed it for one reason or another...

"FOREIGN" FILMS:

Ma Vie En Rose (one of my all-time favorite films ever)
Like Water for Chocolate
Wild Reeds
Antonia's Line
The Dreamlife of Angels (ok-so i hated the ending, but the girl in it is really cute (and also in Wild Reeds))
Scent of a Green Papaya
Strawberry and Chocolate
All About my Mother
Set me Free
Beautiful Thing

CLASSICS: (so they're not all "quality"...i can quote them and therefore they have high entertainment value)

Sixteen Candles
Pretty in Pink
Breakfast Club
St. Elmo's Fire
Trading Places
Cadyshack
Stand By Me (i'm a sucker for coming-of-age stories, especially about boys for some reason...)
Goonies ("because it's OUR time, our time down here. but that's all over the minute we ride up in troy's bucket." classic.)
Beaches
Pretty Woman (brian, my old roommate, and i would quote this endlessly)
Steele Magnolias (this too-"are you high, Clairey?)
Mystic Pizza , and other not-so-quality julia films. i can't help it.
ET (I saw it 8 times at the theater when I was a kid...it made me weep uncontrolably, but I couldn't stop going to see it)
Billy Madison, Happy Gilmore and Big Daddy (dunno why, but I think Adam Sandler is really funny)
Tommy Boy (again, dunno...but cracks my shit up)

MY FAVORITE FAVORITES:

Fried Green Tomatoes (read the book first, still think the movie left too much out. but msm. love her.)
The Color Purple (ditto)
Cookie's Fortune (i have a thing for altman flicks. dunno why.)
But I'm a Cheerleader (clea...mmmmmmmm)
If These Walls Could Talk 2
The Usual Suspects
Tumbleweeds
Waiting for Guffman (oh, my, god...i've never laughed so hard in my life)
Reality Bites
Beautiful Girls
Mallrats
Drop Dead Gorgeous
The Player
Election
High Art
Bring it On (okay, I've got this weird cheerleader thing. i hate them, but i love them. but i hate them. and this movie cracked me up. i can appreciate such over-the-top, being-cheerleaders-yet-still-making-fun-of-them dialogue. "well i'm the team captin and i'm pulling rank. missy's the poo. so take a big whiff."
Jesus's Son
Thelma and Louise (duh.)
Shawshank Redemption
Boys on the Side (i recently found the place where they shot all of the "bar" scenes. fantastic.)
The Sandlot (again. little boys and baseball. what is with that? i've got this "all american" thing going on.)
The Wedding Singer
Higher Learning (jennifer connelly. yeah. and the soundtrack. and the film was quite moving.)

FAVORITE OF THE mOmEnt: Billy Elliot (I've seen it only twice-which is not much at all for me-but I LOVE it. Everything about the movie is incredible. The actors, the portrayal of the family, the relationship between Billy and his grandmother, between he and Michael, between he and his father. Incredible. It's so touching and emotional and I don't think I've seen a film this good in a LONG time.)

DECENT MOVIES I'VE SEEN RECENTLY:

Best In Show (Christopher Guest and Eugene Levy are incredible)
Nurse Betty (I expected something light and funny, and that's not what I got at all, but I did like it a lot)
The Others (I had no idea the plot would twist like it did. And I actually found the film quite funny. The little girl cracked me up.)
Loser (okay, this is a total, complete teeny-booper film with jason biggs and that tiny girl from american beauty, but i wanted something light and dumb for last friday night. but that's not what i got at all. i found it quite endearing, and i really bought the sappy "feel sorry for the nice guy who everyone takes advantage of" story line. perhaps i emphathize.)

TERRIBLE MOVIES I'VE SEEN AND WOULD STRONGLY URGE YOU NOT TO WASTE YOUR TIME ON:

Annie O (hee hee, girls)
Dr. T and the Women
Charlie's Angels (sucky, sucky, sucky)
Me, Myself and Irene
The Virgin Suicides (I thought it'd be good, but I was bored out of my mind)

MOVIES I'VE NEVER SEEN AND WILL NEVER SEE: Titanic
