History of Meelick GAA

Gaelic Football has been played in Meelick for over a hundred years. The records show that on March 27th 1889 Meelick were beaten at Kilrush by Kilmacduane by 1-4 to 0-1. Meelick had a fine football team at this time and defeated the All Ireland Champions of that year, Limerick Commercials in a challenge match.
In 1917 Meelick won the Clare Intermediate Hurling Championship. One of the players Paddy White was afterwards shot in Spike Island during the troubled times. Another member of the side Jack Liston made history. He is the man credited with scoring a goal and a point with the same puck of the ball. The cover of the ball went over the bar and the inside went under and both flags were raised.
