| Each student has special talents and gifts that make them an unique artist. Modern classical singers must not only have a great voice but also have great diction, be a good musician, a compelling actor, and a dynamic personallity. Musical theatre students must learn how to use their voices safely and effectively to compete in such a highly competitve market. Whether singing opera or Les Mis, a singer must allow their voice to become part of their actor. To help this happen a singer must find a natural, free production of the voice that is connected throughout to the text. Singers of contemporary music including Rock, R&B, Christian, and Pop music need an approach that is closely connected to the speaking voice. Singing for theses styles should not be artificial, operatic,or harmful to the voice. Classical concepts of breathing and singing are useful but must be adapted to accommodate the style of the singer. No matter what style, by building on the student's strengths and improving their weaknesses, the student will become more confident in their performing, grow as an artist, and make themselves more competitive in reaching their goals thus making performing more enjoyable. |
