A "medsen fey" is a leaf doctor, a person who knows how to use leaves and other plant parts to
promote health and cure illness.
Most people have some general knowledge of plants. For example, most people in the USA
know that citrus fruits are good for colds and chamomile tea helps a person relax, things like that.
Here in the Caribbean the plants are different from those in the temperate climates, but folk
knowledge is passed along in the same way, by word of mouth and family recipe.
There are no written manuals for a medsen fey, and no organized schools of botanical knowledge.
But some people take an interest in plant medicine and pick up every little detail they can. A
great deal of this knowledge is concentrated in the hands of Vodouisants, since we are called on
to do healing work.
A medsen fey may be a man or a woman. A medsen fey may be a Vodou initiate, and there are
some Houngans and Mambos who function primarily in this role. Others are not initiates but have
personal or family lwa who help them in their work, and still others are simply very good
herbalists who work without spiritual intervention.
There are thousands of medsen fey in Haiti! Every little neighborhood has one. I have begun to
work with the Roots Without End Society. I collect the herbs Mambo Racine and her initiates
need for their ceremonies, leaf baths, and magic, and I make remedies for them when they feel
sick. I do massage, too.
I receive a lot of my knowledge in dreams. If I am treating a sick person, very often I have a
dream, and I see the leaves I should give that person. I make tea, and infusions in rum.
I treat people with digestive problems, acid stomach, gas, constipation and sexual problems... I treat fevers, and colds, and aches. I have medicine which cleans and purifies the blood. I treat children who aren't
growing well, or who are being persecuted by evil spirits. In addition, we always make sure that the sick person gets the best possible care from a medical doctor, and sometimes the doctor works together with me.
I work with people who have chronic illnesses, including diabetes, hypertension, and HIV/AIDS. While I can not cure these diseases, there is much that can be done to help a person live a longer, healthier life.
I also do magic - if your wife or husband leaves you, I work to make them come back. Or if you
love someone and you want them to be attracted to you, I do magic for that.
I am not a medical doctor, and there are some things that I can not treat by myself. If a person
has a disease that a medical doctor can treat, they should go to the doctor first! Then they can
come see me, and I will help them too.
I am glad that I have begun to work with Mambo Racine, because I like her house. She takes
care of her initiates and I help her to do that. When I work with Mambo Racine, I meet people
from other countries. I was at the last kanzo, in fact I come to every dance at Mambo Racine's
house.
