Aspect Configurations

These deal with aspects between the planets and luminaries and exclude the use of the Ascendant, MC, and Moon's Nodes in these planetary patterns. More than the number of planets as signified can be involved in these configurations. e.g. a conjunction could be squared to another conjunction, etc., bringing more energies into the aspect pattern. Also a planet could be conjunct a planet in the configuration but not actually aspecting the rest of the configuration planets, then it is interpreted as being involved in the pattern through the first.

The T-Square

When two planets are in an opposition aspect, both squared by another planet, the aspect configuration is called a 'T-Square'

The T-Square shows constant dissatisfaction between the planets and the Houses involved. When one is constantly dissatisfied, one has the driving urge to accomplish in order to overcome the dissatisfaction, so the configuration is a powerful one, indicating strength and purpose in the individual. A great deal of tensions (the opposition) would also be apparent.

The T-Square usually involves planets of the same Quality - Cardinal, Fixed, Mutable - but can be over the Quality borders if planets fall at the very end or beginning of the sign. The Cardinal T-Square would be drawn to work on the energies, to use them. The Fixed T-Square would be in a bit of a rut of constant dissatisfaction and would take longer to accomplish something than the Cardinal T-Square would. The Mutable T-Square would not have the same strength of purpose, for the very meaning of mutable indicates someone whose interest is often drawn in various directions and could leave things unfinished. As such, the Mutable T-Square could be the most frustrating of the lot.

The Grand Cross

The Grand Cross configuration is a combination of two T-Squares - two sets of oppositions, involving four planets which are all squared each other, usually in the same Quality. The meaning of the T-Square configuration can be doubly emphasised for the Grand Cross. Now there is constant dissatisfaction involving an extra planet, House area, etc., together with an extra conflicting and tension aspect. The Grand Cross personality gives an extremely difficult to satisfy, more ambitious personality who always does things the hard way - in fact feeling that in order to accomplish anything, things must be done the hard way, or even the long way, so making life more difficult for himself. Having a Grand Cross in a chart is rather like being on a windmill and being unable to get off.

The Grand Trine

When three planets trine one another making a triangle, usually in the same element, this is a configuration of luck in that the individual always falls on his feet no matter what befalls him. It is said to give the ability to 'build on the ashes of defeat'. This implies a defeat before utilizing the skills to overcome this. There is a sense of ease about the individual, a sense of being satisfied with the area of the chart involved and also the Quality the planets are found in. It would be easy for the Air Trine to circulate, to communicate, to relate. Things come to the individual and so they may take too many things for granted and sit back and wait for things to come to them.

The Kite

The Kite is a Grand Trine with a difference. One Planet in the Grand Trine is opposite a fourth which in turn is sextile the two planets in the Grand Trine. The sextiles and the opposition involved in this formation indicate opportunity to work to obtain the benefits promised by the Grand Trine. These individuals are the ones who are always frightened of pushing their luck too far. They feel they must put something into it first, to work for the opportunity and benefits they gain from life. There is always that string attached to the kite to bring them back to earth, and even thought they may hold that string they are aware that the winds of change could well pull the kite from their grasp.

The Yod (Finger of Fate/Finger of God)

This configuration is a combination of two planets in a sextile aspect, both quincunx (inconjunct) a third planet. This can be an opportunity (the sextile) to make the breaks (inconjunct). This is the individual who knows that once he closes one door, another one will open. The quincunx gives to make clean and complete breaks and the sextile makes it easy to make the change. It can be looked on as a configuration of growth, for if one is able to close doors in order to open another, the experiences gained from his actions signifty growth and development. Whatever happens to this person that is 'good', there is price to pay. Whatever happens that is 'bad', there is always a silver lining, hence the Finger of Fate.

                                                                                                ***

A combination of these planetary patterns often occur in charts. For instance, the Grand Trine with one of It's planets also involved in a T-Square pattern. This would indicate a person constantly dissatisfied with certain areas of his life, who comes to the point where he feels he has accomplished something, will sit back and enjoy it - but not for long. It is in his makeup to be dissatisfied, to aim for something better, so he goes through the process again and again. The T-Square creates the problem and the Grand Trine saves the situation.

The Grand Trine/Grand Cross combination is similar to this situation, but the Grand Cross is rather like a closed circuit, constantly revolving around doing things the difficult way in order to achieve and accomplish more and more. He always knows that at some point things will come to him, and he will go off on a tangent for a while - a little rest and a little recreation - before getting back onto the windmill again.

The 'Open' Configurations are when there is nearly a T-Square with two planets in opposition to each other, a third is squaring one planet in the opposition but out of orb of squaring the other end of the opposition. This configuration is not interpreted as beinf a T-Square and must be read as such. Even though some charts may thrive on tension, enjoy making life difficult for themselves, at some stage they will look for ways out to seek relied from the tension, an outlet. These outlets are shown by the easy aspects - the trines and sextiles, which are connected to the difficult configurations. Even the sesqui-quadrates (135), semi-squares(45) and semi-sextiles (30) can be an outlet. Irritation and annoyance can be easier to handle than constant dissatisfaction.

This also works the other way around. If a person has a Grand Trine, which could indicate ease and laziness and apathy, look to see if the individual is going to work at or work on the beneficial aspect. See if there are squares, etc., connected to the configuration, which would indicate that the individual would be motivated to use the Grand Trine.
