Keeping Evil at Bay

Angelica: carry a sprig to guard against witches' spells

Bay Laurel: place over door to keep away poltergeists

Dill: said to have protective powers against magicians and witches (see St
John's Wort)

Fennel: stuff in keyholes to keep malignant forces away

Five Finger Grass: Allegedly wards off any evil that Five Fingers can do.

Garlic: thought by many cultures to keep evil at bay. Hung around the neck
to deter vampires; German miners used it to keep evil spirits away from them
in the mines; to dream of eating garlic means that hidden secrets will be
revealed

Rosemary: when the root is in the house no harm will come from demons; hang
over bed to prevent nightmares

Rowan Wood: Evil has no power over the home where this is kept.

Rue: rub on the floor of the home to expel witches; planted in window boxes
it
creates a barrier for misfortune; medieval madness cure: dew collected at
midnight mixed with rue.

Solomon's Seal: A pinch in all corners will exorcise evil spirits

St. John's Wort: Worn around the neck in an amulet or placed at an entrance
for protection. Medieval protection potion: equal parts dill, St John's
Wort, trefoil and vervain infused and placed at the main entrance of the
home

Sulphur, powdered: Burn outside door to drive away all evil influences.

Wormwood: hang on doorframe to keep vampires and evil spirits away; a salve
of wormwood was said to keep unwanted nocturnal visitors away
