Easy Garden
When I first decided to start a garden, I was clueless. I had no idea what would grow well in my area (Michigan), so I bought as many herbs as I could afford.
I knew I wanted chamomile. And now I have it forever. It grows in the same spot each year (my neighbors think it is a weed). The flowers look like little daisies and are delicious in tea (dried flower heads). Even the leaves (which I don't use for tea) smell so good.
I wanted spearmint, lemon balm and peppermint. I will have them too, FOREVER. Be careful when planting any mint family herb. You may want to plant them in a container to prevent them from spreading. They have an underground root system like crazy. But I like letting my spearmint and lemon balm go crazy. I can tell which is which by smelling the leaves, I like the unruly look of my herb section.
Lemon Verbena. Oh. My. It is so good. It is a leafy herb (that will grow into a shrub like plant) that has the strongest scent of lemon I've ever smelled next to an actual lemon. It is good to toss into a fire, keeps cats away, scents up your 'undies' drawer. It is perfect and easy easy to grow.
Next, I planted wormwood. Little did I know that this teeny little plant said to "keep bugs away" would return the following year as a giant bush. Mine never flowers, it is very strange and I have a lot of gothic people asking me for some to make absinthe (*a highly toxic yet drug like drink made from it's leaves*) I finally cut the living hell out of it and now it looks nice and does a decent job keeping out bugs.
Finally, sage. Sage is a very magickal herb. You can make smudge sticks to purify the air, you can burn it (stinks like pot-be careful) to bring prosperity into your life and you can use it when you're cooking up some chicken or pork. Mmm.
I have other herbs that run rampant in my garden, but those are my staple favorites. Those are the herbs that come running back to me each year (except the lemon verbena, it never came back to life). So if you live in a northern climate or a climate with frost ending around May and beginning around October, these should grow well.
*Tip: if you live indoors, most all of these herbs will thrive in a pot on a window sill*
