Planetary hours are helpful when you need to perform a spell quickly! They are simple to use and easy to understand. I know, when I first looked at the charts, I was like WHAT? But really it is easy and simple. However, figuring out the planetary hours is pretty math-oriented.
To use planetary hours, you first need to know what your purpose is. For example: if you're doing a love spell, you'd look for your listing under a Venus hour (or on a Friday which is the day for Venus). Ok, it's that simple!
Here is a listing of the Planets and their meanings:
Saturn
*Ruler of Capricorn and Aquarius
*Metal is lead
*Colors: brown, dark green, dark blue and black
*Day: Saturday
*Rules: barriers and limitations, time and clocks, business, karma, melancholy, things
that require patience, rewards that are worked for, and endings.
Jupiter
*Ruler of Sagittarius and Pisces
*Metal is tin
*Colors: purple and indigo
*Day: Thursday
*Rules: law, religion, freedom, fun and laughter, education, high magick, ritual, optimism and confidence.
Mars
*Ruler of Aries and Scorpio
*Metal is steel
*Colors: red, dark red and magenta
*Day: Tuesday
*Rules: sex, war, conflict, anger, energy, danger and excitement, pain quarrels, wounds, poison and violence.
Venus
*Ruler of Taurus and Libra
*Metal is copper
*Colors: bright blue and pastels
*Day: Friday
*Rules: social matters, music, art, beauty, romance, love, pleasure, creature comforts, possessions, values charms and amulets, perfumes.
Mercury
*Ruler of Gemini and Virgo
*Metal is mercury (quick silver)
*Colors: blue gray and patterns
*Day: Wednesday
*Rules: neighbors, relatives, merchants, buying and selling, books, cars, small animals, consciousness, speech, thieves, messengers, and business people.
Moon
*Ruler of Cancer
*Metal is silver
*Colors: pearl, green and iridescent hues
*Day: Monday
*Rules: public in general, food and drink, water, family, home, country, short journeys, women, emotion, Mother, soul, real estate, weather, and domestic affairs.
Sun
*Ruler of Leo
*Metal is gold
*Colors: golds, yellows and oranges
*Day: Sunday
*Rules: people in authority, men, the God, self expression, heart, confidence, life, the will, ambition, individuality, children, stock market, employment, money, and vitality.
Uranus, Neptune and Pluto are not used in planetary hours-however they do have reference in magick
Uranus
*Ruler of Aquarius
*Metal is uranium and rainbow-hued metals
*Colors: rainbow
*Day: n/a
*Rules: electricity, divine inspiration, t.v. genus, mental insanity, the aura, chaos, freedom, astrology.
Neptune
*Ruler of Pisces
*Metal is neptunium and noble gases
*Colors: gray
*Day: n/a
*Rules: psychic, spirits, visions, illusion, fog, earth quakes, secrets, addiction and alcoholism.
Pluto
*Ruler of Scorpio
*Metal is plutonium and radio-active elements
*Colors: black
*Day: n/a
*Rules: ESP, research, rebirth, death, rape, metamorphosis, sex, and merging with a partner.
I would recommend using the "planet symbol" drawn on candle of the appropriate "color" on the planet "day". Then just assign your purpose and complete your spell.
You can use your Llewellyn's Magical Almanac for planetary hour listings. If you don't have a Magical Almanac, I suggest purchasing one, they are filled with lots of interesting stories and articles relating to Pagan issues.
