Water’s Soul

************ Morty and the Princess of Water *****************
A beautiful meteor shower came down that evening, clearly visible from the roof of the Tin Tower in Ecruteak. Morty stood atop his sanctuary, watching the multi-colored comets rain down upon Johto. They looked like stars falling from the heavens.
Morty sighed, turning away from the beautiful skies. It had been a long day at the Ecruteak Gym, and he wasn’t in a very good mood. Lately, one too many Fog Badges had been acquired from his gym, and the Pokemon league was starting to think that Morty wasn’t the right person for the title of the Ecruteak City gym leader. His lack of training had made his once-powerful Ghost Pokemon vulnerable to almost everything. He was worried now, that he would have to leave his gym and his sister Luna behind. Luna, the co-leader of the gym, was the league’s second choice for a leader, so if Morty was kicked out he knew she’d take his place.
“I don’t know what to do anymore, Gengar,” he said, looking at the Pokemon by his side, his strongest and most faithful Pokemon Gengar. “If I lost my gym, where would I go?”
“Gengar…” replied his Pokemon, patting him on the back as Morty let himself slip to a sitting position.
“I hope you’re right,” Morty said; understanding his Pokemon’s words in full. Gengar had assured him that everything would be okay, and he almost believed it.
Suddenly, a bright blue flash lit up the skies of Ecruteak. The light blinded Morty as he stood up, holding his arm over his eyes. Out of the corner of his eye, he saw a tiny meteor crash on the other end of town, near the Burnt Tower.
“Whoa,” he said, looking down at the ground when the light cleared away. “Gengar, stay here. I’m going to check it out.”
“Gengaar,” replied his Pokemon. Morty stood up and jumped from the top of the tower, his telepathic abilities keeping him afloat. Slowly he landed on the ground and ran toward the Burnt Tower.
The deep blue light was still just as bright behind the Burnt Tower where the comet had landed. Morty approached it with caution, shielding his face from the light. Then, suddenly, it dimmed… Morty looked up to see a girl standing there, blocking him from the light. It was like she had appeared out of nowhere.
As he watched, she picked up the stone that had fallen and placed it around her neck. Morty saw that it was a necklace; a blue heart-shaped gem that was surrounded with silver spikes. He also saw her face. The girl had fairly long brown hair that curled at her shoulders, and deep brown eyes that sparkled with silver tones in the light of the necklace’s stone. She was wearing a short black skirt with long blue leggings and black shoes that looked like dance shoes, and a light blue shirt that wrapped around her chest with skinny beaded straps around her shoulders. She looked like a warrior of some kind.
The only thing Morty didn’t notice was the look of anger in the girl’s eyes. She had spotted Morty, and she wasn’t exactly happy about it. She took a few steps forward and glared at him, changing the expression on his face to confusion.
“Excuse me,” he started to say, but she didn’t seem to be listening. She raised her hands above her head, creating a ball of blue energy in between her palms. Morty backed away.
“Water, surround me!” she shouted, a strange wind blowing up from beneath her feet. Waves came splashing from behind her, headed straight for Morty!
“Whoa!” he said, concentrating his telepathy on the incoming attack. He waves broke around him as if hitting an invisible shield.
“What?!?” shouted the girl. She ran up to Morty, and looked him in the eye. “What are you?”
“...What?” he said.
“How did you deflect my attack?” she demanded. “What kind of power do you have?”
Morty sweatdropped. “I’m telepathic,” he said. “Now, can you tell me how you used a water attack on me?”
“Uh... Well...” she said, looking down at the ground. “I can explain...”
“I told you about my powers,” Morty said. “Can’t you tell me about yours?”
“If you promise not to tell anyone,” she replied. Morty nodded.
“Come on, let’s go to my gym,” he offered. “You look cold. I’ll give you something to drink, and we can sit and talk.”
“Okay,” she agreed reluctantly. Morty led her toward his gym, continuously looking back to catch another glimpse of her eyes. They weren’t normal… they were almost pure brown, with no pupils. It was strange, and a bit scary, but still… They were so pretty...
“I’m not from this world,” the girl said, seating herself in a big, soft chair. “I come from another realm, chasing after these.” She pointed to the necklace that rested on her collar.
“These? How many are there?” Morty questioned.
“There are six diamonds, one representing each element,” she replied. “Just a little while ago, the stone of darkness decided it wanted to be dominant and take over my realm. It took the necklaces and scattered them here, sending the elements off balance. Now, in my realm, there is nothing but war and chaos.”
“So what are you doing here, then?”
She sighed. “I am known as Yui, the Soul of Water and the only elemental soul that is still alive in that realm,” she said. “All of the other souls died long ago... but that is beside the point. I came to retrieve my necklace, and the rest of them too.”
“I see,” said Morty. “This is unbelievable...”
“There’s more,” Yui said. “The only way to restore peace to my land is to gather the five souls of light and destroy the darkness that has inflicted itself upon the world.”
“But you said they were dead,” Morty said.
“I believe that the other four souls have resurrected themselves in human form in this world,” she said. “That’s why the necklaces ended up here... they know who their rightful owners are.”
“The necklaces know?” Morty asked. “Do they have brains now??”
“Be serious!” she snapped. “If I can find the four souls and necklaces that I’m looking for, I can bring them back to my world and restore the elemental peace.”
She paused, and added, “And I have no clue why I just told you all of that.”
“Well, would you let me help you?” Morty asked out of the blue. Yui sweatdropped, and stared blankly at him. “Are you kidding me?” she asked. “You have no idea what you’re getting in to! Are you sure?”
“Y...yeah!” Morty said, blushing deeply. “My ESP can help you find the people and the stones that you’re looking for.”
“I can’t believe you don’t think I’m crazy,” she said.
“Well, after you get attacked by water that comes out of nowhere, there’s not much you don’t believe,” he said.
Yui laughed; her smile made Morty blush even more. “Well, you can help me, on one condition,” she said.
“... What?” Morty asked nervously.
“Tell me your name,” she said.
Morty smiled. “Morty Avalon,” he said. “I’m eighteen.”
She laughed again. “Why should that matter? I’m only sixteen.” Morty laughed this time. “Well, age doesn’t matter,” he said, elbowing her flirtatiously. She blushed furiously. “I like you, Morty Avalon,” she said.
************ Soul of Wind *****************
Falkner brushed his hair back as the wind cooled his face. No one could see his false eye from this high in the air anyway. His Pidgeot cooed, soaring higher into the clouds than it ever had.
“All right, Pidgeot, you’re getting better at this,” Falkner complimented.
“Pidgeooo!!” it cried, flapping its wings and sending feather flying all around the duo. Falkner laughed, and patted his prized Pokemon’s back.
“Come on, let’s hurry now,” he said. “Luna will be waiting for me.”
Pidgeot nodded, flying toward the Ecruteak City gym. Falkner and Luna had been dating for a few years now, and Pidgeot had become very attached to his trainer’s girlfriend.
Suddenly, a white flash brought Pidgeot to an abrupt stop. Falkner looked ahead to see something that looked like a star floating in front of him, emitting a baby blue light.
“Cool!” he said, plucking it out of the air. The glow stopped, and Falkner saw that he was holding a necklace, a heart-shaped sky blue gem hanging from a black leather cord. Sharp spikes surrounded the gem, poking into Falkner’s hand.
“Weird,” he said, stringing the cord around his neck. He let the light necklace fall to his chest, and instructed Pidgeot to keep going, thinking nothing of it.
He reached the gym minutes later, landing swiftly in front of the door. Re-calling Pidgeot, he walked in. He went into the living room to be confronted by the cutest sight he’d ever seen; Morty was sleeping on the couch, with Yui rested on his shoulder. Falkner had no idea who the girl was, but it looked adorable just the same.
“Hey wake up, lovebirds,” he said, smirking at his best friend. Morty blinked open his eyes, and blushed bright red when he saw the pretty girl asleep on his arm.
“Eep!” he said, slinking away. Yui woke up and looked at him, yawning. “Morty, don’t be so loud,” she sighed. Falkner laughed, and Morty rolled his eyes downward and blushed.
“How adorable!” Falkner teased.
“Shut up, Falkie,” Morty said, using Luna’s nickname for him. This time, Falkner blushed.
“So, finally found a girlfriend, huh?” he continued. “Well, I told you you’d find a girl.”
“Falkner, she’s not my girlfriend,” Morty said. “I just met her last night…”
“Well, you two sure look cozy,” Falkner said.
“What is that?” Yui shouted suddenly, springing up and running to Falkner, grabbing the necklace. “This is the Air stone!”
“Air stone?” Falkner asked. “What’s that?”
“Does it shock you when you touch it?” Yui asked, looking into Falkner’s eyes.
“…No,” he said. “I found it in the air when I was flying on Pidgeot.”
Yui closed her eyes, and let the necklace drop. It glowed, and Falkner felt a strange, sharp pain in his chest. “Do you feel that?” she asked.
“If it’s supposed to hurt like a bitch, yes!” he replied.
Yui smiled. “Falkner, is it?” she asked. “You are the Soul of Air.”
He blinked. “Um… Yeah.”
“Need convincing?” she asked, taking Falkner by the hand. “Come outside. I’ll show you how to use your stone.”
She led Falkner outside, Morty following. “Okay, now just tap the stone and… well, say something and see what happens!”
“What are you talking about?? Soul of Air… I think you’re crazy,” he said. “Morty, you’re in on this aren’t you?”
“Just trust the lady,” he said.
Falkner looked down at his necklace. Skeptically, he touched his hand to it, and thought, “I want to fly.”
Suddenly, another sharp pain coursed through him, this time the sensation burning in his back. He felt his skin explode, but it didn’t hurt… he looked back to see a pair of cream-white wings sprouted from his back.
“What the… holy shit!” he exclaimed. To his surprise, he could feel the muscles in the wings as if they were part of his body. He flapped them slowly, letting pearly feathers fall to the ground. With one quick swipe, he took off into the air, knowing exactly what to do for some odd reason. He ascended, climbing toward the ever-beautiful sky.
“Whoooo!!!” he shouted, nose-diving toward the ground. At the last minute, he righted himself, landing softly on his feet. The wings pulled back into his back painlessly.
“So…” he said, “tell me more about this ‘soul of air’ thing.”
************ Affection *****************
As the time passed, Yui and Morty grew very attached to each other. Yui taught him all of her training methods, and for three straight days they trained together, running through the whole city. But Yui was starting to become worried; they only had two of the stones that they needed, and Yui could sense that they were running out of time.
“I have to start getting serious,” Yui was saying. She and Morty were sitting in the living room, talking over a cup of hot chocolate. “I’m not sure how time is passing in my world. For all I know, it could be gone by now. And I only have two of the elemental souls.”
“Am I really any help?” Morty said. “Because if all I’m doing is distracting you… you know, you can leave if you want to.”
Yui looked at him. “No, Morty, you are helping!” she said. “I need you around for backup in case Falkner and I get hurt. I mean, you’re really the only one in this world with powers besides us…”
Morty found it hard not to blush while he looked into her eyes. She was talking to him, but he barely heard what she was saying. Suddenly, she leaned forward, aiming to kiss him on the cheek. Morty turned his head a little too soon, and her kiss planted itself right across his lips. Yui blushed, and pulled away so fast she fell off of the couch.
“Oh! Are you okay?” he asked, helping her to her feet. She nodded, but her face was so flushed that she couldn’t speak. “I’m really sorry,” he said slowly.
“It’s… okay,” she stammered. “It wasn’t that bad.”
Morty’s eyes widened. He sweatdropped and blushed deeply. “Well…”
Yui kissed him again. “I won’t leave you, Morty Avalon,” she said sweetly. “Now get some sleep. You’ll need it.”
“Um… Sure!” he said. “Good night?”
“Good night.”
He stood up, dazed, and obediently walked upstairs to his room. Yui sat down where he had been, curling up and finishing her chocolate. “At least,” she said silently, “I hope I won’t have to leave you.”
************ Curiosity *****************
Chikara Rocket was seventeen years old, an elite member of Team Rocket. Her father, the leader of the team, made sure she was absolutely spoiled… everything Chikara wanted, Chikara got. She was considered even more spoiled than Giovanni’s Persian.
She went with him one day to a store called the Curiosity Shop in the west of Viridian City. It opened at night, selling mysterious goods that were almost always either found or stolen. Giovanni had heard of them getting some diamond collars in stock, so he had gone to get one for Persian. Chikara had tagged along, hoping to score another free toy.
As Giovanni explored the back of the shop where the collars were, Chikara browsed the shelves near the front. Looking through a glass case, she noticed a beautiful necklace with a huge, green heart-shaped gem in the middle of a field of spikes. It hung from a durable black cord.
“Wow, it’s lovely!” she said.
“Like it, eh?” said the owner of the shop, a weird old man. “Somebody dug it up for me in the ruined area behind Mt. Moon where the comets hit. It’s on a big bargain sale for only $500.”
“That much?” Chikara exclaimed.
He thought for a second. “They think it’s a valuable green Moon Stone,” he lied quickly. “Very valuable.”
Chikara’s eyes twinkled. “Daddy!!”
They walked back to the gym, Chikara smiling while looking down at her necklace. It bounced as she walked, glowing a faint green light. “It really is a valuable evolution stone!” she cried. “Look, Daddy, it’s glowing!”
“Yes, yes, just enjoy it,” he said, eyeing the collar studded with too many diamonds to count. “That stupid rock was more expensive than my collar.”
“I know,” she said, smiling even more brightly. “Thank you soooooo much!”
“You’re welcome,” he growled. Chikara took this as her cue to shut up.
************ Soul of Earth, and the Sharing of One Mind *****************
Yui woke up the next morning to feel a weird throbbing in her head. “Oh no!” she shouted.
Upstairs, Morty heard Yui’s cry and ran downstairs frantically, not even changing into his clothes. He rushed down the stairs in his boxers, and almost tripped over his own feet. “What’s wrong, Yui?”
“I think another stone has been activated!” she said, shaking the sleep out of her eyes. “Morty… do you think you can help me?”
“I’m… not exactly sure,” he said.
“All you have to do is read my mind, find out which stone I’m thinking of and track it down,” she cried. “You have to at least try!”
“I will,” he said. “But first… may I get changed?”
Yui looked down at his bare chest, and almost fell over in shock. Her face turned about 82 shades of red. “Y..y…yes, get changed, Morty-chan,” she said.
Morty rested his hand against the back of Yui’s head, and she leaned backward, relaxing her thoughts as he had instructed. He shut his own eyes and concentrated, looking into her thoughts.
“I think… I can sense it,” he whispered. “I can sense what you can.”
“Good,” she sighed, sitting up. “Can you tell where it’s coming from?”
“Sort of,” Morty said. “It seems to be really far to the east…”
Then, an image entered Morty’s mind… an image of a girl he knew. She was sitting up in her room, admiring a dark green necklace.
“Chikara!” he exclaimed.
“What?” Yui said.
“I know who has the necklace you sense. Come on,” he said, grabbing her arm with his left hand. With his other hand, he snapped his fingers, teleporting them into a large room. A blonde girl sat on her waterbed, and sure enough she was wearing one of the element necklaces.
“You were right!” Yui said. “See, Morty, I told you that you could help me!” He blushed.
“Um… Morty, what are you doing here?” asked Chikara.
“Tell me,” Yui said, “did that necklace glow when you put it on?”
“Yeah,” she said. “It’s a moon stone.”
Yui held back her laughter. “That is no moon stone,” she said. “That’s the Earth Stone. I guess you’re the Soul of Earth.”
Chikara sweatdropped. “Morty… who’s the crazy Chiko and why did you bring her to my house?”
Morty almost laughed too. “Whatever she says is hard to believe but it’s true,” he said. “According to her, you have some kind of element powers.”
“Yeah, right!” Chikara said. “Don’t tease me like that.”
“You need convincing too,” Yui said. “Okay, touch your necklace, and then try to lift up your dresser.”
“WHAT?!?” Chikara exclaimed. “I’ll break my back if I try to pick that up!”
“Really, try it,” Morty said. Chikara stood up, touching the tip of her finger to the diamond.
“All right, but if I hurt myself…” She held her hands under her dresser, lifting it softly. She expected it not to move… it lifted off the ground with ease, and Chikara brought it up above her head.
“Wow…” she sighed, looking up at the heavy thing she was lifting. “How am I…?”
“Like I said,” Yui laughed. “Earth is the toughest element. Your ability is strength, along with the power to control nature and all of its elements.”
“Cool!” she screamed, putting it back in place. “So I guess this necklace was worth $500 after all…”
************ The Unnatural Soul of Fire *****************
It was all over the news the next day… Azalea Gym had gone up in flames. Yui and Morty watched intently as the firefighters tried desperately to put out the raging flames.
“I guess five generations of bug training has finally gone up in smoke for the Tenrio family as their beloved Azalea Town gym burns to ashes before our very eyes,” said the news reporter sadly. “The building has been evacuated, and…”
“My Bugsy’s still in there!” came a distressed cry. The camera switched over to a young woman with purple hair standing in front of the gym, her hands held over her face in shock and sadness. She made a break for the building, but the firefighters held her back. “It’s too dangerous, ma’am!”
“But my son is still inside!” she cried.
“I’m sorry, but there’s nothing we can do…”
Yui’s head shot up from Morty’s shoulder. “Teleport me in there,” she instructed.
Morty glared at her. “You’re kidding!” he said. “You’ll die!”
“The fire won’t hurt me, I’m Water,” she said. “Quick, before he burns to death!”
“All right,” he said. “I’m getting out of there right away, so just call me when you find him.”
“Yes,” Yui agreed quickly. Morty hesitated, then snapped his fingers, transporting Yui into the depth of the flames. In another flash he was gone.
“Bugsy!” Yui called, remembering his name from the TV. “Are you in here?”
She stepped over the flames, slowly burning her legs as she advanced. “Water! Put out the flames!” she commanded, sending forth a wave of cool water. It washed over the flames, but her attack evaporated into a burning mist that scalded her face.
“What the…?” she wondered aloud. “This must be…”
Suddenly, she saw a figure through the flames… it looked like a young boy with dark, shoulder length hair. He was sitting in the middle of the flames, clutching his chest in fear.
“You’re Bugsy, aren’t you?” Yui asked, running forward. He looked up, and Yui could see all the tears in his eyes.
“Go away!” he yelled, blocking her from seeing what was around his neck. “This fire is all my fault! I’m going down with my gym!”
Yui blinked. “Wait… can you even feel the flames?” she asked.
Bugsy looked up. “They’re hot but… they don’t hurt me,” he said, surprised. He dropped his hands so that Yui could see the red heart-shape necklace around his neck.
“The Soul of Fire!” she cried. “Bugsy, if you concentrate on putting out the flames, they’ll go away. All you have to do is want it to happen.”
“How?” he yelled.
“JUST DO IT!” she yelled back. Bugsy felt skeptical, but he’d do anything to save his gym. He placed his hand over his heart, making the wish that his gym would be saved.
At first, nothing seemed to happen. But gradually, Yui and Bugsy began to notice that the flames were faulting, dying down more every second. Finally, the burned wreckage that was Azalea Gym stopped flaming, and the two teenagers ran out from the ashes.
“Bugsy!” his mother cried, running to embrace him. “You’re alive, sweetie! You’re not even hurt!”
“I’m fine, Mother,” he replied, hugging her back. “I’m just fine!”
“Oh, Bugsy…”
Yui watched the touching scene with a tear in her eye. “Hey,” she finally said, tapping Bugsy’s shoulder, “can I talk to you for a second?”
“Sure,” he said, straying from his mother. He followed me to a spot away from all the people and media.
“Listen carefully,” I said. “The only reason you were able to put out that fire is because of this.” She pointed to the Fire stone.
“I found this necklace outside my gym,” he replied, a look of pure sadness sweeping over his face. “I put it on and I went inside, and then I was climbing the trees. It accidentally hit one of the branches, and the whole gym went up in flames!”
“Don’t worry,” I said. “This necklace holds very powerful elemental power. And you’re the only one who can use them, Soul of Fire.”
“I’m fire?” Bugsy asked. “But… I’m a bug trainer.”
“That doesn’t matter,” I said. “The type of Pokemon you train really doesn’t determine what’s inside here.” She pointed to his heart, and smiled brightly.
************ Darkness and Light *****************
Will, the lowest ranking member of the Elite Four, considered himself nocturnal; he only trained at night. While the world slept, Will was outside on the plateau, training his Pokemon by moonlight.
“Xatu, use your Psychic attack on me!” he instructed. Above him hovered a strange bird that looked like a totem pole… it clapped its wings together and sent a blue wave at its trainer. Will took the hit, flying back a few feet.
“Good…” he complimented, getting up and rubbing his head. “You’re getting stronger, Xatu. But we’d better turn in for the night.”
He re-called the Pokemon and, replacing it on his belt, walked out to the edge of the plateau. The night was starless and beautiful… an absolutely perfect evening. Will decided to sleep under the skies tonight, and begin training first thing in the morning. There was a challenger scheduled to show up next week, so Will had to bring up his strength.
Just then, a twinkle in the grass drew his attention from the skies. He jumped down from the plateau onto the soft fields, following the sparkling object in the grass. Finally, he spotted it and picked it up… it was a necklace, bearing a silver, spiky charm with a black heart-shaped diamond in the middle.
“Stunning,” he whispered, “a black diamond. I wonder who lost this…”
He unfastened the silver clasp and strung it around his neck, the charm falling just under his chin. Instantly, the diamond began to glow, emitting a black light that surrounded Will, throwing him to the ground. Some kind of energy from the necklace seemed to be cutting into his heart. He tried to pull the necklace off, but the touch of the clasp shocked his hand. Soon, the force became too much for the Elite trainer. He blacked out…
Once again, Morty and Yui were in the Ecruteak Gym… talking. Yui was rested against his shoulder, nuzzling him lovingly as he spoke.
“I put Bugsy to bed,” he said.
“Is he okay?” Yui asked, resting her hand on his leg.
“Fine,” Morty said. “He’s going to be staying here with us until his parents can find a new home.”
“That’s good,” she said. “Soon, we’ll find the Light stone and we can right all of these wrongs.”
Morty hesitated. “Yui… What will happen to you once your world is back to normal?”
She looked up at him. “I’ll stay there, of course,” she said. “All of the Stones will be put back in their rightful places, and the people who come from here will be safely returned to their world.”
“Oh…” he said. “When you leave… I’ll miss you. A lot,” he said.
“I’ll miss you too, Morty,” she sighed, nestling herself against his arm.
“No… I mean, I really care about you,” he said. He turned his head and kissed her deeply, his cheeks blushing. At first he felt nervous, but then he felt her kissing him back, and all of his tension disappeared. He turned his body, taking her into his embrace and laid her slowly down on the couch. Then he lay next to her, looped his arms around her waist and kissed her again, and again…
“Morty,” she sighed, her fingers running through his hair. She inhaled deeply as he pulled her closer and kissed her neck, sending chills up her back. “I love you…”
He looked up, staring into her deep eyes. They were still only one color, but they sparkled with affection. “I love you too,” he said, She smiled. “I know….”
“Do you have to leave me?” he asked, his face dangerously close to hers.
“I don’t know,” she said. “I can probably stay, if I know my world is in good condition…”
He kissed her, and pulled back to look into those strange eyes. “I hope so,” Morty said. “I don’t want to lose you.”
“You’ll never lose me,” she said, holding him tightly. Then, together the two of them slept, content in each other’s arms.
The next day, the two lovers were walking through the tiny forest near Ecruteak City, arm in arm.
“I feel something strange,” Yui said, clutching Morty’s arm. “We might be close to finding the last stone.”
Morty’s face fell. “That’s… good, I guess,” he sighed, looking down.
“You’re scared, aren’t you?” she asked. “Scared that I’m leaving you?”
He nodded. “Morty, I told you last night that you will never lose me,” she said. “I’ll be with you forever.”
Morty smiled. “I’m glad,” he said.
Then, Yui took a step forward and jumped up in pain. She looked down to see a necklace under her foot; the last one. She picked it up and stared at the clear gem. “Oh… the Light stone.”
“Can you tell who it belongs to?” Morty asked.
“Not yet,” Yui replied. “The only way to tell is to… well, try it on everyone until we find the right person.”
“That’ll take forever!” Morty exclaimed. “Isn’t there a faster way?”
Yui looked down. “I figured as much,” she sighed.
“What?”
“You want me to leave.”
“NO!” Morty shouted. “Why would I want you to leave? I love you, Yui, I don’t ever want you to go back!”
She sighed, leaning up against him. “I’m sorry…” she cried. “I’m just so scared that if I have to leave, I’ll never see you again. And I’m taking it out on you now… I’m sorry.”
“Yui…” Morty sighed, holding her close. “Don’t worry. I know what you’re going through.”
“How can you possibly…?” she began.
“I’m scared too,” he interrupted, “because of the thought of losing you.”
She looked into his eyes. “I’m still sorry.”
“Don’t be,” he whispered. He brushed her lips with his kisses, pulling her closer to him. “I love you, Yui.”
“Morty…”
Suddenly, a twig snapped loudly in the background. The two looked up to see a man dressed in a black fancy jacket and red dress pants, his eyes blocked off with a mysterious mask. His dark violet hair hung limply around his face, and he was breathing heavily. Morty thought he recognized him.
“Will, is that you?” Morty asked, taking a few steps toward the man. “Are you okay…”
In response, the man touched his hand to a jewel on his chest and fired a beam of dark energy at Morty. He flew back, sliding through the long grass.
“Morty!” Yui cried. She looked closely at the diamond the man was wearing, and gasped in shock. “Morty… that’s the Dark stone,” she breathed.
“What?” Morty groaned, getting up and rubbing his head. “Yui… Get out of the way!”
“Huh?” she questioned. Suddenly, Will lunged at her, grabbing her round the waist and knocking her to the ground. He hissed, revealing sharp fangs along both rows of his mouth.
“Aah! Morty, help!” she screamed. He got up, ready to attack, but the beast-man was quicker. He picked Yui up and, throwing her over his shoulder, took off into the woods.
“YUI!” he shouted.
“Morty…” she called back. “Find out who this belongs to! Then bring the others and come after me!” With these words, she threw the Light stone at him. Then she was gone… Morty couldn’t even hear Will’s footsteps anymore.
“Yui…” he breathed, hanging his head. He looked down at the Light stone on the ground, and scowled. “Stupid stones,” he mumbled, slowly picking it up. “If it wasn’t for them…”
But he stopped, because suddenly the necklace began to glow in his hand. Mesmerized, he put it on… it glowed even brighter than before. Morty felt cold and light-headed, as if some strange energy was flowing through his blood.
“Whoa…” he sighed, looking down at the glowing gem. “This means I can help her……. BUGSY!!” he yelled, running back toward the gym.
Morty woke up Bugsy, and made sure he was wearing the Fire necklace. He also gathered Falkner and Chikara, and brought them to the place in the forest where Will had kidnapped her.
“Where is she?” Falkner asked, looking around.
“I think they went back to… wherever Yui came from,” Morty said softly. “I wasn’t sure what to do but… she said to come after her when I found the owner of the Light stone.”
“It wasn’t that hard, was it Morty?” Chikara asked. He smiled, but it didn’t last long. “I still don’t know how we’re going to find her,” he said.
“Well, which direction did he carry her off in?” Bugsy asked. “She said to follow her… maybe we’ll find the path through to her if we follow his footsteps.”
Morty blinked. “You’re smarter than you look, Bugs,” he said. “They went this way.”
“Are you sure?” Chikara asked. Morty nodded. “Hurry. I hope it’s not too late,” he said, running through the path of broken twigs that Will had left. The three others followed him, and soon they came to a dead end blocked off by trees.
“Nice going, Morty,” Falkner said.
“But I know he went this way, I just know it!” he yelled, stamping his foot angrily on the ground. As he did this, a small part of the ground moved, rippling like water.
“What was that?” Chikara yelped.
“I dunno,” Morty said. He jumped up, and as he landed the ground rippled again.
“Do you think that’s it?” Bugsy asked.
“Only one way to find out,” Morty said. He ran and jumped, sinking into the ground. Falkner went next, stepping slowly into the distorted earth.
“Should we?” Chikara questioned.
“Well… Morty will never get his girl back if we don’t,” Bugsy said, smiling.
“His girl? You mean they’re…”
“The night they thought I was asleep, I went downstairs to see what they were talking about,” he said. “The two of them are so cute together.”
“Cute… yeah,” Chikara said.
“Well, I’m in,” Bugsy said, jumping through the hole. Chikara hesitated, then slowly followed him down.
************ The Final Battle *****************
Yui woke up in an unfamiliar place; she hadn’t even remembered when she fell asleep. She sat up and looked around… the area was beautiful. She was resting on a bed with white sheets, and she was wearing a long blue dress with a slit in the right side. There was only one sleeve, which was on the left arm. The other side wasn’t ripped or anything, that’s just the way the dress had been created.
“Am I…?” she stammered, looking around. “Home?”
Suddenly, a voice laughed evilly behind her. She spun around to see Will standing beside the bed, smiling grotesquely.
“You’re the thing that brought me here!” she demanded. “Who, or what, are you?”
“I am Will of the Elite Four,” he spoke. His voice sounded unnatural… you could clearly hear Will’s real voice. But you could also hear a dark, evil voice in front of it. Like two people were speaking at once.
“You’re not really who you say,” Yui whispered. “You’re the Dark spirit inside that necklace… the one that wants this world to yourself.”
“Smart girl,” said the two voices. “I didn’t want to have to do this, Princess of Water, but you have to die.”
“You can’t,” she stammered, backing away from him. He just smiled, and jumped onto the bed with a catlike pounce.
“Really?” he said, pushing her down. “Try and stop me.” He came down on her neck with his fangs, tearing through her flesh. She screamed in pain, and tried desperately to push him off and move away.
“Water!” she yelled, releasing a wave from her necklace. The beam pushed him back, and he hit the bottom of the bed. But his cry was normal… it sounded only like Will.
“Foolish girl,” said the evil voice. “You can’t hurt me… you’ll only hurt him. You wouldn’t want to hurt and innocent person, would you?”
Yui sobbed, holding her hand over her bleeding neck. She felt incredibly dizzy, and her eyes began to close.
“Don’t sleep yet,” evil Will said, jumping at her again. “I’ve only just begun.”
Far across the land, Morty heard his love scream. He opened his eyes and found himself in the middle of a dark battlefield. The earth was charred and burnt, and the waters were raging, angry, against the wind.
“Ugh…” he moaned, rubbing his forehead. “I think I know where we are…” He looked down at his companions, who were also knocked out. But during the trip, their outfits had configured… Falkner and Bugsy were wearing shirts and pants of the color of their necklaces. Chikara was wearing a long green dress with no straps and a see-through slip-like layer over the skirt.
“Cool,” he said, looking down at himself. He was wearing a white muscle shirt and long pants of pure pearl white. His headband had even changed color. “Guess this means I really am light.”
“What is going on?” Falkner asked, waking up. He looked down at his light blue muscle shirt, and smiled. “Nice,” he complimented.
“Yeah!” Chikara said; she had woken up and noticed her dress. She stood up and admired herself, spinning around like a model. “I think I like it here.”
“Yeah, well, look around,” Morty said, pointing at the disasters taking place. “This place is being destroyed, all because of these crazy stones. We have to find Yui so we can reverse this.”
“Okay, sorry,” Chikara said. Falkner nodded. “Sheesh, Bugsy, wake up!” He kicked the young boy, who immediately jumped to his feet. “I’m up, I’m up!!”
“So… How are we going to find Yui?” Falkner asked.
“You go look for her,” Morty said. “You fly around and find her. Then I’ll teleport us to where she is.”
“Sounds good,” Falkner said, tapping his necklace. The shining wings emerged from his back, and he took off into the gray skies.
“I hope he finds her soon,” Morty said. “By now, it might be too late…”
Yui lay on the floor beside the bed, her life slowly ebbing away. She had cuts and rips on her neck, arms, legs and face. She lay in a pool of her own blood, crying and staying still. Whenever she tried to move, Will would hurt her again.
“Are you dead yet?” he said dully, kicking one of the wounds on her arm. She moaned in pain, weakly curling herself into a ball. “Guess not.” He kicked her in the back, and bent down to tear a piece of her lower back out with his teeth. She screamed, and grabbed his hand.
“Stop it!” she cried, her eyes tearing terribly. “If you’re going to kill me, just stop torturing me and do it already!”
“I’m waiting for the right moment,” he hissed, taking her by the hand. “I’m going to kill you right in front of your precious Light Prince.”
“Morty…” she cried. Suddenly, Will’s fingers erupted with razor-sharp claws that cut through her hand. She screamed, grasping her arm in agony. He removed the claws, and blood poured from her hand. Her arm went limp.
“Wait over there,” he sighed, kicking the crying girl away. “Your friends will be here soon. Don’t worry, they’ll all die too.”
Yui curled herself up, her tears falling onto her arms. “Morty… Where are you?” she cried.
All of a sudden, she felt another presence in the area. Morty ran to her side, kneeling down, staring at her with wide, surprised and angry eyes. “Yui! God, what happened to you?”
He picked her up and held her, staring into her eyes. Almost all of their color had faded away. “I’m so sorry, Morty,” she cried. “I promised that I wouldn’t leave…”
“You won’t leave!” he yelled, “We’ll kill the Dark and you’ll be just fine! You can come back with me!”
“Morty… I just want you to know that I love you,” she said suddenly. Morty knew then that she was dying… “My last bit of energy will help you guys get that necklace off of Will. You must promise that you’ll bring him back.”
“…I will,” he said. He kissed her bleeding mouth, putting all of his emoting into that moment. “I love you, Yui…”
“I love you, Morty,” she said weakly. She staggered up, walking over to the group of friends that Morty had brought to her. They all looked horrified, but they listened closely to what she was saying.
“We all need to make a circle around Morty,” she said. “Then, we concentrate the power of our elements into his stone. That way, the Light will bring down the Dark, and the necklace will fall off.”
“Okay…” Chikara sighed.
“Are you sure you can do this?” Falkner asked. “You look terrible…”
“I have to,” Yui said. “It’s the only way to reverse what has happened here.”
Morty sighed, and stepped in the middle of the group. “Let’s do this,” he sighed, staring mournfully at Yui. She was so coated with blood that you couldn’t tell where she was cut… except for the pieces of loose skin that hung from the wounds. Her eyes were almost completely white. She looked at him one last time, mouthed “I love you,” and shut her eyes, holding hands with Falkner and Bugsy.
“Water,” she whispered. A very faint blue light poured from her stone, swirling around Morty. His stone shone with this new power, and it held him in place.
‘I’ll try,’ Chikara thought to herself. “Earth.” A powerful blast of energy shot out at Morty, almost knocking him over. His necklace exploded with power.
“Air!” Falkner shouted, feeling the power around him. Another beam of light hit Morty from the side, and he cried out a little. His stone was virtually hovering in front of his face.
“Fire!” Bugsy said timidly. Morty braced himself as the red light hit him from the left; the clasp on his necklace came undone and the stone floated in front of his face.
“Light,” he declared, staring at Will scornfully. The beast backed away, ready to attack with a spell of darkness, but it was already too late. The black stone was hit with a strong rainbow beam, knocking the trainer back. He landed with the necklace a good six feet away from him on the grass.
“We did it…” Morty whispered. He smiled slightly, but the blissful moment didn’t last long. Yui dropped to her knees, and then fell hard to the ground. “Shit! Yui!”
He knelt down, rolling her onto her back. Her eyes were shut, and her mouth was still. She wasn’t breathing. “Yui… Don’t die…” he cried, lowering his head. His tears dropped down, swirling with the blood on her ripped garment.
“Please, Yui…”
“It’s too late,’ Falkner said sadly. “She’s gone, Morty…”
He didn’t hold back then; he just cried, holding the lifeless girl in his arms. All three of them could hear his sobs echoing across the empty valley. “Morty…” Chikara whispered.
“Poor guy,” Bugsy said.
Morty finally looked up. His face stained with tears. He stared at Yui one last time, picturing her staring back with her beautiful eyes. 'Promise me that you’ll bring him back,’ echoed his thoughts, her voice repeating itself in his mind.
“I won’t break my promise, Yui,” he said. “I love you…”
He slowly laid her on the ground, and shot to his feet. His Light necklace lay on the ground behind him; he left it. “Stupid fucking necklaces,” he mumbled. “If it hadn’t been for them, Yui wouldn’t have died.”
“But Morty… Without the necklaces, you never would have met Yui in the first place,” Bugsy said. “And you never would have fallen in love.”
Morty smiled at him. “Thanks,” he said. “Are you leaving your stones too?”
“I am,” Bugsy said. “I don’t want the memories of this.”
“Neither do I, even though the powers are kind of cool,” Falkner said. Both boys removed their necklaces and placed them on the ground by Morty’s.
Then, everyone looked at Chikara. “It’s probably best to leave it,” Falkner said. “You never know, maybe they need to be here to keep the dark one from going psychotic.”
She sighed. “Okay,” she agreed, but I’m going to be in trouble from Daddy.” She took it off and placed it near Yui. “Here’s to Yui. We’ll always remember her.”
“To Yui,” repeated Falkner and Bugsy.
Morty looked down at his lifeless lover. “To Yui… the only girl I will ever love.”
“You’ll find someone else, Morty,” Chikara assured, but he didn’t hear her. He was already going to get Will.
“Come on,” he said, picking up the heavy man. He slung him over his shoulder and slowly came back to the group. “Everyone hold on, I’ll take us back to the warp point,” he said. They did, Chikara leaning mournfully against his shoulder. Then, with a snap of his fingers, Morty warped them away, taking one last look at Yui.
************ I’m Looking for Someone *****************
It had been two long weeks since Morty and the others had left the element realm. As for their promise that they would always remember Yui… so much for that. They had woken up in their own homes, not remembering a single thing about Yui, the necklaces or anything that had happened in that world. Well… at least most of them. Morty didn’t exactly remember, but he still felt like there was something missing in his life… like a hole in his heart. It was an antagonizing feeling, especially not knowing why it was there.
He often found himself walking through that forest, looking around as if something, or someone, should be there. But there was never anything there… only emptiness, the same feeling that surrounded his heart. He walked the forest again this day, wandering aimlessly through the trees. Eventually he came to a dead end.
“What is wrong with me?” he asked himself, covering his face in his hands. “Why do I feel so alone?”
“Excuse me?” said a sudden new voice. He looked up to see a girl about his age, almost nineteen years old. She had brown hair that reached down just past her shoulders, and wore along blue dress with only one sleeve and a line on the right side, revealing her leg.
She walked up to him. “I’m looking for someone,” she said. “His name is Morty Avalon. Do you know him?”
“That’s me,” he said slowly, “but…”
“Oh, Morty!” the girl said, latching herself to his shoulders. He stood there, confused, until she pulled back and he was able to look into her irregularly brown eyes. Then, the memories came flooding back to him.
“Yui!” he cried, embracing her tightly. He kissed her passionately, tears flowing from his eyes. “God, Yui, I thought you were dead…”
“I guess I just needed a good sleep,” she said. Morty bit his bottom lip, and burst out in tears.
“Don’t scare me like that!” he sobbed into her shoulder. “Damn, I missed you so much!”
“You couldn’t have missed me as much as I missed you,” Yui said seriously. Morty looked up, ceasing his tears to hear her out. “Time passes differently in my world,” she explained. “You were without me for fourteen days… but in my world, I had to travel to the four corners of the map to replace the necklaces in their places. I have been wandering for two years.”
Morty’s eyes widened. “That’s why you’re so much older now,” he said quietly. “I’m so sorry, Yui…”
“Don’t be,” she said, holding him as he had held her. “I love you, Morty.”
“I love you, Yui,” he said, looking her directly in the eyes. He kissed her, holding her tightly. He never once thought about letting her go. Finally, after God knows how long, he pulled away and stared into her eyes. He gasped, as they looked almost normal… there were actually white streaks in her eyes. For once, she looked completely alive.
“So… you’re staying here with me now?” he asked, sweeping her off her feet. He cradled her, carrying her back toward Ecruteak City.
“Always,” she whispered. He smiled, and kissed her forehead. And somewhere, in a faraway sky, the mist after a rainstorm combined with the light of the sun to make a beautiful rainbow. Water and Light were in unison, and both worlds were at peace.
