Chapter 13

Send Me An Angel

It is said, that when a person dies, their soul wanders. Their soul will wander until they find peace. Humans help wandering souls, by making a boat and placing it on a river. The boat will float down the river with a candle, and the loved one’s name. That person’s soul will find the boat, and follow it, to peace.

The wise man said just walk this way
To the dawn of the light

Misty Waterflower stood at the banks of a river. The lush jungle around her was quiet, as if it was mourning for the very same reason she was mourning. She stood, barefoot, the water gently lapping her feet. She wore an orange dress, the bottom of it gently moved in the slight breeze.

The wind will blow into your face
As the years pass you by

She stared at the river, she watched several flowers float off. On those flowers, were candles. A tear formed at her eye, it slowly dropped down.

Hear this voice from deep inside
It's the call of your heart

Memories of Ash flooded her mind as she watched the first flower go by. She remembered his smile, how he always seemed to get himself into trouble, yet always came out unscathed. A small smile appeared on her lips as the bittersweet moment engulfed her. She remembered when he gave her a new bike, it was a bike that brought them together. It seemed as if they were destined to be together.

She remembered Gary, how much he changed. If you asked her about him a couple years ago, she would say he was the biggest prick on Earth. Now, he was a gentleman, smart.

She remembered Oak, how he had been like a father to her and Ash. How he helped her with so many things, always whenever she needed to talk to someone, Oak was there.

She remembered Brock. Brock, the flirt. He never could get a girl. But he always tried, he also had to add his two cents whether you wanted them or not.

She remembered Surge and Sabrina. The both of them being the brains of the group. She remembered how they desperately tried to save people. How they protected them from the Matarae.

She remembered Hawk. Dear Hawk, how his smile and goofy personality always brought a smile to her face. It never failed, he always brightened up the atmosphere of the somewhat dreary expedition. How he sacrificed himself to protect her many times.

She remembered Ragen and Yeti. Those two, they were like brothers. They quarreled with each other. Yeti’s endless mischief, and Ragen’s seemingly endless patience. How Ragen always seemed to be a grandfather, he always had something wise to say about any subject.

Close your eyes and your will find
The passage out of the dark

Misty closed her eyes, remembering everyone. Watching the past years, watching herself grow up. She sobbed staring at the flowers float by, away into the distance. The candle flame beckoning her emotions to unleash themselves. She was alone, she was the only survivor from this expedition. She sobbed harder, she had no one to lean on. No one to talk to. All of her friends, gone. The villagers in the village she found, helped her recuperate. But, she knew she had to go home to Kanto sooner or later. She stood at that bank, feeling like she was the last person on earth. Alone, no one hearing her cries.

Here I am
Will you send me an angel?
Here I am
In the land of the morning star

She saw the Matarae, pummeling the base camp. She heard the cries, and felt the blood washing over her. She sobbed, for them, for the people who died. As she cried, she felt their burden leaving her, relieving her.

The wise man said just find your place
In the eye of the storm

She remembered Umaki. The rose, the serpent. She remembered his touch, his lies bombarding her. She cried, for the man named Umaki. The man who fell from grace. The man who stole her heart and threw it away.

Seek the roses along the way
Just beware of the thorns

She knelt in the bank of the river. The cold water washing her. She couldn’t stop crying, she released all of her past. The tears washed her guilt away, her guilt for running. She needed someone, someone to tell her it was ok. Someone to lean on. Slowly, she felt madness creeping up on her mind.

Here I am
Will you send me an angel
Here I am
In the land of the morning star

The sun began to set, illuminating the river with deep reds and oranges. Misty still stood in the river, tear marks streaked her face. Fireflies began to waken and fly around. One flew towards Misty. Gently, Misty reached out her hand and took it. She opened her hand, and looked at the firefly, watched it fly up into the sky, adding another star to the heavens.

The wise man said just raise your hand
And reach out for the spell

The flowers were long gone. They left her view for several hours. She sobbed until she was drained of all tears. Somehow, the crying released her from pain. She looked out to the river, watching a bird float along the surface.

Find the door to the promised land
Just believe in yourself

Misty saw the birds, how free they were. She stood up from kneeling, and jumped into the water. She swam, as hard as she could. Feeling herself become the water, she rode the current. Fiercely, she swam. Draining every last bit of energy in her body.

Hear this voice from deep inside
It's the call of your heart

She swam back to the bank of the river. Rejuvenated, born again. She dried her hair, kneeling on the sand. She sat down and finished watching the sunset. As she watched it, an invisible knife tore through her heart. She felt the longing again. The longing for Ash, anyone. She needed someone. Anyone. Slowly, she rocked back and forth, sobbing.

Close your eyes and your will find
The way out of the dark

She prayed, for the first time in many years. She prayed that God would send her someone, anyone to soothe her. “Send me an angel,” she sobbed quietly. “I need you now, please help me,” she sobbed, desperately.

Here I am
Will you send me an angel?
Here I am
In the land of the morning star

Quietly, Misty gathered up her sandals. She stood up and took one last look at the river. Praying that her friends’ souls found peace. Alone, she walked. She walked through the forest towards the village. There, she went into her hut and sat down on a chair. Again, several tears fell.

Here I am
Will you send me an angel?
Here I am
In the land of the morning star

Someone placed their hand on Misty’s shoulder. She lifted her face from her hands and looked behind her. Hawk stood, smiling, gently, he brushed a tear from her face. He had one arm in a cast, a couple small bandages were on his face and other arm. Misty smiled, laughing, overflowing with joy. She stood up and flung her arms around Hawk. “Thank you, thank you God,” she sobbed into his shoulder. She felt something on his back, it was a little bag. She took it and showed it to him. It was a bag of drugs.

“My whole stash,” he said quietly. He put his arm around Misty’s shoulders and they walked outside to a bonfire. Hawk looked at his stash, and threw it in the fire. He turned around, and him and Misty walked. They walked, no longer alone.

Hawk wiped his forehead with a bandana. He picked up his hammer and chisel and finished the statue in the middle of Pallet. It was an angel, holding a kerosene lamp and a tear falling from her eye. With a flourish, Hawk finished chiseling the last feather and jumped off the ladder. He dropped his tools and put his hands on his hips. Looking at the work he just completed, he presented it to Ash’s mother, Gary’s sister, and the other gym leaders, along with the Elite 4 and the citizens of Kanto, Palto, Johto, and the other regions.

A whole crowd of people applauded as Hawk finished the statue. It was a huge gathering, in memorial of all who died in that ill fated expedition. Hawk reached into his pocket and took out a sheet. He stepped up to a podium and began to read. “We all, want to know the unknown. We all, want to master the unthinkable. These people did,” he paused, motioning to the statue. “What they did, was stare fear in the eye, and conquer it. They triumphed over betrayals, massive obstacles, and each other. In the brink of it all, we questioned our sanity at least once. These people may be dead, or missing, but we will never forget them,” Hawk finished. He wiped tears from his eyes, and stood next to Misty. The other survivor from the expedition.

On the base of the statue, it was written:

To all who died and were lost in the expedition for Matarae.

May this angel keep your guide light on for you, and lead you home.

----------------------------------------------

Out of all the expedition members, 2 survived.

4 humans are still missing.

2 Pokemon are still missing.

Over 70 people were killed on that expedition, mostly villagers.

Team Rocket has disappeared.

Crime has gone down, and no sightings of the Team Rocket members are reported. Gabriel Ketchum’s body has not been found.

There have been no more reports of deaths in the Mexico area.

The villagers have now, put the legend of Matarae down to rest.

Out of the 60 Matarae sighted and killed, only 59 bodies were recovered.

Six months after Misty and Hawk left for Kanto, the killings started again.

A local poacher named Ezteban Marrind shot and killed a Matarae.

The killings stopped, for now.
