Chapter 12
“No, no matter how far we've come, I can't wait to see tomorrow, with you”
Linkin Park - With You
“Don’t move!” Oak whispered fiercely to Gabriel. Gabriel’s body stiffened, he began to breath in short shallow breaths, quietly. Hawk picked up a rifle slowly from the table, he carefully loaded it and positioned it. Gabriel shook his head in short quick convulsions. The lamp in the tent illuminated Gabriel’s face, along with the shadow of Matarae. It was standing behind Gabriel, just outside the tent. Matarae pressed his snout on the tent, the canvas gently bended in forward towards Gabriel. Matarae breathed in, sniffing Gabriel’s hair. It’s head stayed there for several seconds, then slipped away. The shadow turned around and started to lumber to the entrance of the tent. Hawk had the rifle ready, carefully, he aimed and fired. The shadow convulsed and fell on the floor. “Bullseye,” Hawk chuckled. The hiss of acid began to grow louder as the acid glands began to deflate inside the Matarae’s body.
“Hawk! The entrance!” Sabrina shouted. Hawk spun around and saw two Matarae running towards them in the distance.
“Out of the tent!” Surge yelled. Everyone grabbed a gun and ran out. Gary’s Gevaudan ran head on towards the Matarae.
“Gevaudan! No!” Gary shouted.
“I think he can handle it,” Ash said as Gevaudan unleashed a bolt of lightning from the crystal. The Matarae roared as their whole bodies were overrun with electricity. A Matarae jumped out of the foliage and landed on Surge’s back. It started to claw at Surge’s back violently, Surge bellowed in pain and fell on the dirt. Ash shot the creature twice in the back, it fell off of Surge, dead. Surge moaned as he tried to get off.
“I don’t understand! Vy aren’t they using that gas!?” Ragen roared as he shot another Matarae as it ran towards him.
“I think they are playing with us. They don’t want to use the gas!” Gabriel shouted over the commotion.
“No, they don’t use gas! These are the last Matarae, that one you killed, Hawk, was the only one that used gas!” Sabrina yelled as she unleashed a wave of Psychic energy to act as a shield around the group.
“How do you know!?” Gabriel snapped.
“They told me!”
“Oh God, oh God, oh God!” Misty yelled as she ran through the forest. Thorns and branches scraped her as she ran. A Matarae was closing up on her. She sprinted, every muscle in her body screaming for relaxation. She sobbed as she ran, she had a feeling this was the end. No, it wasn’t, she thought to herself. She sprinted harder, making a sharp left. The Matarae slid in the leaves as it started to adjust its course. Hawk jumped out and pushed Misty aside. He aimed his rifle and fired.
“Die, bitch,” Hawk muttered. The bullet hit the Matarae in the shoulder, it flew back a couple feet, and started running again, towards Hawk. Hawk jumped up in the tree above as the Matarae ran beneath him. Hawk leapt down and fired at the Matarae’s back. It fell, its momentum carrying it through the brush. Hawk ran over to Misty and helped her up. “Sorry about that,” Hawk apologized.
“It’s ok. You killed the bastard anyway,” Misty said, relieved.
“Heh, yeah, they’re dumber than I thought. C‘mon, let‘s go, let‘s see what we can find.”
“Ok..”
“Repeat! Backup needed immediately!” Surge yelled through the radio.
“Roger that! We’ll be there in 20 minuets.”
“Make that 10! I don‘t think we‘ll last that long!”
“Ok, 15, but I’m not promising anything. Over and out.”
“Dammit!” Surge yelled. He threw the radio on the ground. He fired again at another Matarae. These suckers were coming like flies. They already tore down the whole camp and were now trying to get through Sabrina’s psychic shield. Surge found the radio on the floor, and got through to the Mexican government and they said they would be there, to help. Surge didn’t mention about Matarae, if he did, they would laugh and think he was joking.
“Well, are they coming?” Ash asked.
“Yeah, they’ll be here... I hope.”
“Ragen watch out!” Gary shouted. A Matarae swung it’s claw at Ragen, hitting him square in the chest. Ragen gasped in pain and stumbled back.
“AIEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!” A white fur ball flew out of nowhere and started beating the crap out of the Matarae that attacked Ragen.
“Yeti! Haha! I knew you’d come here!” Ragen yelled with joy. Yeti relentlessly beat the Matarae with its fists and began to gnaw on the Matarae’s head. Finally, Yeti unleashed a powerful punch which hit the Matarae in the back. The beast’s back caved in and the familiar sound of acid began. Slowly, it ate away at the body until there was nothing left.
“Gabriel! How can the acid still be in the Matarae even though it does not use it!?” Ragen yelled.
“Every Matarae has those acid glands, they are only usable by a few,” Sabrina stated.
“How the hell do you know this!? You never worked with them!”
“They told me, Gabriel.”
“Misty, are you ok? Can you keep up?”
“Yeah, just a bit tired. Where are we?”
“I don’t know.. Look, over there!” Hawk pointed a distance away, there was the base camp, what was left of it. Hawk began to jog towards the base camp.
“Hawk, watch out!” Hawk screeched to a halt, he almost ran off a cliff. He looked down, there was a raging river at the bottom, the canyon rendered Hawk and Misty useless. There was no bridge to cross at, all they could do was sit down and watch the Matarae attack their friends.
“Misty, can I see my rifle?”
“Yeah, here.” Misty handed Hawk his rifle. He examined it closely.
“Ah, here we go,” Hawk muttered. He flipped a little latch on the rifle, a small gap opened in it. Hawk took out a scope and attached it to the rifle. “Let’s pray this works.” Hawk lied down on the ground near the edge of the canyon. He held the rifle, and with expert ease, aimed it at a Matarae that was attacking Gevaudan. He fired, the Matarae fell, dead. Gevaudan paused and looked at Hawk, Gevaudan’s head nodded slightly, as in approval, with a roar, it ran towards Gary.
“Where are they? Dammit!” Gabriel shouted.
“They should be coming soon..”
“Well, they better hurry up, agh!”
“Dad!” Ash yelled as Gabriel was grabbed by a Matarae. It dragged Gabriel by his coat along the ground. Gabriel groaned in protest and started hitting the Matarae with his cane. The cane hit the beast’s jaws with a snap and the Matarae let go. Gabriel jumped to his feet and turned to the Matarae. The Matarae rubbed its snout in the ground and pounded the dirt. It looked up and attempted to scratch Gabriel. The Matarae shrieked and its innards blew out, spraying Gabriel. Gabriel looked around, trying to see who shot the thing. A little ways ahead Hawk was sharp shooting the Matarae as they attacked the group. Misty stood next to Hawk trying to find a way to the camp. Gabriel looked a bit puzzled, until he saw the canyon separating Hawk and Misty from the camp.
“Where the hell are they coming from!?”
“I don’t know!”
“Sabrina?”
“They won’t say, my guess would be that the acid, is like bait. The acid smells, and attracts other Matarae!”
“So, what? We stop killing them!?” Ash yelled hysterically.
“Gevaudan! Help Sabrina!”
“Huh? How can he help me?!”
“The crystal, it has to have some power, your starting to tire!”
“Ok, ok!” Sabrina lowered one hand and gingerly placed it on Gevaudan’s crystal. Power surged through her body. Immediately, the psychic shield widened, several Matarae touched the shield and were shocked to death. Again, the shocks delivering a blow which blew up the acid glands.
In the distance, propeller blades began to make their steady beat. Two helicopters emerged and began to land in the base camp. The Matarae slowed down their assault and hesitated. They didn’t know what to do about this strange metal bird which appeared. Sabrina lowered her shield as about twenty Mexican soldiers armed with machine guns ran out. Oak signaled to shoot the Matarae, they nodded and shot at the Matarae while the people went into the helicopter. Gabriel began to get into the helicopter, when a soldier pushed him away. The soldier shot Gabriel in the chest and left him on the ground. Ash screamed and tried to get his dad’s body, but the soldier blocked him from getting close. “He’s the leader of Team Rocket,” the soldier said, the words thick with a Hispanic accent.
“He’s my dad!” Ash retorted, holding back tears. The soldier’s eyes widened, he kicked Ash down on the grown.
“Team Rocket is no more! All who are affiliated were ordered to be shot on sight!”
“Noooo!” Misty shrieked from the canyon. Adrenaline poured through every vein in her body. She leaped over the canyon, a 10 foot jump, and sprinted to Ash. Hawk put away his rifle, and readied himself to follow Misty.
“He’s with me! Don’t! He hasn’t known about this, ugh,” Professor Oak began, a Matarae plowed its hand through Oak’s stomach, with a sickening plop, it pulled its hand out, Oak dropped, dead. The solider in front of him turned pale, all the other soldiers were dead, the Matarae killed them. The Matarae bared its teeth and lunged for the soldiers neck.
“Misty! Run! Get away!” Ash yelled as he tried to kick back a Matarae. “Now!” Misty sobbed, reluctantly, she agreed and ran away, towards the village, if she was right, the village was just North of here. Through sobs, she ran, away from the cries of pain, and the roars. Finally, as she was about three miles away from the camp, she heard an explosion. In the distance, the whole field in which base camp was, was consumed by flames.
