We stayed overnight 21/22 March 2002 at the comfortable Glenfern Villas motel near Franz Joseph Glacier village.

A few kilometers South of Franz Joseph is The Fox glacier.

At the face of The Fox Glacier

The faces of both glaciers are accessible after short hikes of around 30 - 45 minutes. The terrain is fairly easy going and the unguided walks can be accomplished by people of all ages with a normal degree of fitness. Arrangemnts can be made for climbing visits onto the glaciers by experienced trampers. Helicopter flying visits over the glaciers are available. Some members of our group did this and had the experience of a touchdown with a short walk on the ice near the head of the glacier.

After lunch we headed South for an overnight stay at Haast visiting Lake Mathieson and Lake Paringa Salmon Farm on the way.
