Apple® has never formally acknowledged a problem with the power adapters that are supplied with their portable computers. i.e "iBook", "Powerbook". There are many horror stories regarding these power supplied littered all over the net. Some of which I have linked to below. The stories range from the chargers simply refusing to work after only a few hours out of the box, to whole chargers exploding and causing fires. These problems date back to the days of the "Yo-Yo" power adapter that came with the "Clamshell' iBook and when Apple redesigned it to the current form-factor, everyone thought that the problems were over, however, the problems continued...

I bought a 12" Powerbook in April of 2003, it was my first Mac , it was a magnificent experience and the battery life was great, however, I didn't like carrying this charger around with me, to and from boarding school, so I bought another one for home... Alas, the one that came with the 12" Powerbook failed after about 3 months and lo, I was left with one charger again. (Doing my final year exams, I didn't have time to deal wtih a broken charger, so I let it slide) In May 2004, I bought a 15" Powerbook, pictured below... Thinking it would be fantastic having two chargers again, I totally forgot about the other charger failing and conceded that it was a fluke, because we are paying more for Apple gadgets because of their superior build qulaity right?

The charger I bought then failed out of the blue... again, I had to buy another. What bothers me most of all is how much more expensive Apple gear is in Ireland than seemingly anywhere else in the world!!

It gets worse, the charger that came with the 15" Powerbook is going to die soon as well, the first symptom is having to twist and turn the connector to get an amber/green light... soon, I will be left with one charger again and that sucks.

You can be sure I will try my best to get a replacement for this one if it fails.

This is most distressing and disappointing from such a revered and respected company. Their industrial design is second to none, Apple create THE best looking computers on earth, yet, something as fundamental as a power adapter fails... on a Very consistent basis.

I created this website in the hope that Apple will sort out this mess, I am not looking for replacements of the ones that are already not functioning as they are past their warranty date. I just want Apple to fix this problem so it will make the experience of using the best computer on earth an even better one for all... oh, and please Apple, don't skimp on the cable!

The Aftermath

This is what I think of apple's quality control

The Innards are quite complex

How did 2 of my four power adapters cease to function?

it's ridiculous!! sort it out apple!!!

I smashed one of them out of curiosity and I will keep the other broken one for properity.

The Price of the Power Adapter in Ireland is obscene compared to the US. It's true that VAT is much greater in Europe, but this is just simply ridiculous!!

US - $79 Japan - $91 UK - $119 Ireland - $133

I got a few emails questioning me about how I treat the Power adapters and I can assure you, I treat them with the utmost care and consideration... To be honest, I don't even take them anywhere... My current chargers have been stationary 99% of the time, here is a photo of my desk to show you my set up. It is like this most of the time, HOW does a charger break in a situation like this? I think you can probably share in my frustration now...
