| 12 Step Rebels with The United and Rum Fitz March 28, 2003 Kicking off the show, Rum Fitz played a lack luster show. I couldn't quite pick out why, but the band had a very mundane sound in my mind. The songs were generic and uninteresting, and most of all, the singer's voice was muffled and hard to understand. However, the band put out a lot of energy and called in a good number of audience members. Next up was The United, whom I had expected not to have very good crowd involvement techniques. I couldn't have been more wrong (you know what they say: "Don't make assumptions, they make an ass out of you and me", except it sounds a lot better in person). Anyway, the guys had the crowd frenzied, and although Insomnia Coffee House enforces a strict rule of NO MOSHING, the audience took every chance they had to move around wildly. Finishing off the show, the 12 Step Rebels came out with the most interesting look I've seen on a local band so far. With dyed hair, dramatic makeup, cowboy hats and other accesories, the band was hard to peel your eyes from. They started off rambuctiously, and before their set was even half way over, the fire marshall showed up and asked that the show end promptly. Apparently, Insomnia Coffee House is only allowed to have a maximum occupancy of 50 people. It's really too bad that our all-ages local shows keep getting shut down. Hopefully, from now on, when we do get other all-ages venues, everyone will appreciate and respect them (no more breaking sinks off of walls please, as was the case at Smooch's). |
