Eighth Grade American History

 

Course Description

 

This course examines American History from the Maya to our present time.  In addition to history, some time is spent studying geography of the United States, the U.S. Constitution, and the Federal Government.

 

The Lecture is the principal method of instruction.  Students are required to have a history notebook and to take class notes.  Some history classes are spent working on map skills, outlining, and short reading assignments.

 

Textbook

 

Each student has their own textbook: “American Journey” Glencoe, McGraw-Hill

 

Homework Policy

 

There are several types of homework assignments:

 

  1. Rewrite notes.  This helps the students organize them into effective study guides.  The notes are the basis for the test.
  2. Teacher generated questions about readings or exercises at the end of each chapter.
  3. Reporting on current events.
  4. Study for test.

 

Tests and Projects

 

There will two to three tests and one project each marking period.  Students should study for at least two days before the tests.  Every test will have at least one essay question.  The writing done for tests and projects will be assessed critically in accordance with the Eighth Grade Core Curriculum Standards.
