Breed Profile
Donkeys

Origin: North Africa
Common Color: Mostly grey dun with light muzzles. Spotted and other colors occur.
Average Height: 10 - 13hh

Donkeys are small and wiry animals, with huge ears and coarse manes and tails. Unlike horses, donkeys don't whinny or neigh, they bray! It's that characteristic EE-Aw! sound. They often have zebra stripes on their legs and dorsal stripes. They can have white muzzles, rings around their eyes and under their bellies.
Female donkeys are called Jennies. Male donkeys are called Jacks. The types of donkeys are labeled by their sizes: 36" and under, Miniature Mediterranean; 36.01-48", Standard; 48.01" to 54 (jennets) or 56 (jacks), Large Standard; and 54/56" and over is Mammoth Stock.
Donkeys can be trained to be ridden and driven just like horses. They show all the gaits that horses do (some are even 'gaited'), though considering their laid-back nature, galloping isn't their favorite!
