Introduction

Something is growing, replicating, and communicating inside you at this very minute.  Something very small is doing all of these things and you are not even aware of it happening.  Did you know that it's a cell?  Yes, a cell!  Imagine that a cell is a company that you have a new job in.  You are an organelle (a worker) within the cell.  What is your job?  What can you do for your company to make it a successful business?

The Task

Every living thing is made of cells.  Cells contain many organelles that help its structure and function.  The organelles work together as a team to make the organism operate.

Your job is to work as a team, like the organelles of a cell do, and answer the question: “What are the structure and functions of a cell?” by researching and designing a presentation on an animal or plant cell’s structure and function.

The Process

1)    You will be split into 6 groups of 5. Three groups will research the plant cell; three groups will research the animal cell.

2)    Gather with your group and discuss how research, work and organelles will be split up amongst group (Who will write up all the information? Who will work on which organelles? Who will create the presentation? What kinds of research are you looking for?).

3)    Brainstorm about your project and presentation (what materials do you need?).

4)    Bring a sketch/outline of what YOU PLAN TO DO (INDIVIDUALLY FOR THE GROUP) with you to class.

5)    Have one person hand in a description of your group’s presentation and delegation of jobs to the teacher

6)    Before starting any research for this webquest, brainstorm with your group and create a concept map based on the questions below to think about while doing this webquest:

§         Have you ever wondered what’s inside a cell?

§         What makes a cell work?

§         What does each organelle do inside the cell?

§         What is the structure of the organelle?

§         How do the organelles work together?

§         What relationship does each specific organelle have with the cell?

§         What do you hope to learn from this activity?

7)    Once you have created the concept map from the above questions, use the links below as resources to find information about your cell and organelles to answer the question “What are the structure and functions of a cell?”

8)    Research and create a presentation to explain your cell’s structure and function. The presentation must be made on PowerPoint. BE AS CREATIVE AS POSSIBLE! Use music, images, video clips, etc… to “jazz” it up

9)    You will each have to hand in a short written report on the steps you took to obtain the information on your organelles, the websites you visited to find the research and what you found out as well as what the parts you researched do for the cell. This will be graded individually.

Resources

These are URLs that you can use for your quest that provide information on cells, and images of both plant and animal cells. You may find links within these WebPages to search for more information as well. Please remember to cite any other WebPages you use to obtain information!

Evaluation

Your performance on this quest will be evaluated on certain research criteria that will be submitted individually as well as overall group work, presentation, creativity and content. Therefore you will receive two separate grades for your work on this webquest.

You will receive an individual grade for your short written report of the steps you took to obtain the information on your organelles, the websites you visited to find the research and what you found out as well as what the parts you researched do for the cell.

The group will receive a common grade on overall group work, presentation, creativity and content.

Group work

One person officially did all the work because there was no collaboration between the group members and there was constant arguing between group members.

Each person did a specific part of the webquest. There was little to no collaboration or communication between members, about research and presentation. Group arguments arose too often.

Group work was split and some people communicated and collaborated together without consulting rest of the group as a whole. Some members participated in some parts of the webquest but not others. There were few arguments within the group.

Group worked as a functional unit collaborating and communicating with each other to get the presentation, research and information together. Everyone participated in all the aspects of the webquest, was involved in creative process, and research. There were no arguments within the group.

Presentation

Not creative, disorganized, half hazardly researched (cut and pasted info), no images, music, video clips, etc… no resources cited

Mildly creative, partially organized, and researched, only 1 or 2 images, no music, video clips etc… barely any resources cited.

Somewhat creative, moderately organized and researched, contained some images, etc… some resources left out

Creative, well thought out, clearly organized, thoroughly researched, resources cited, contained many images, music, video clips, etc…

Creativity

Black and white, hard to read fonts, no pictures, music, video clips, etc…, point and click entrances and exits, not exciting or entertaining to audience, no PowerPoint timing consideration. Over-packed slides.

Few colors, normal font, only 1 or 2 pictures, little to no music, video clips, etc..., little thrill or entertainment for audience to watch, few entrances and exits, no PowerPoint timing. Over-packed slides.

Moderately colorful, still black and white, fewer pictures, music, video clips, etc…, some entrance and exits, somewhat exciting and entertaining, some use of PowerPoint timing. Somewhat not over-packed slides

Flashy, colorful, easy to read fonts, colorful fonts, “jazzy,” lots of pictures, music, video clips, etc…, entrance and exits of information, exciting, entertaining to audience, good use of PowerPoint timing. Not over-packed slides.

Content

Only a few organelles researched, little information about those if any, not distinguishable as plant or animal.

Information about some organelles but not others. Not distinguishable as plant or animal.

Moderate information about each organelle of plant or animal cell, distinguishable as part of one or the other.

Provide thorough information about each organelle of plant or animal cell, distinguishable as part of one or the other.

Conclusion

By doing this webquest I want you to have:

§         Worked as a team to complete this quest

§         Gained more knowledge about the structure and function of plant and animal cells

§         Completed a creative presentation to share with the class

§         Utilized the internet to research and obtain information
