'And it was at that age..."
"At the age of 25, everyone is expected to make a choice. He or she must decide by that time whether the passion of their life will be for the gift or for another." Annalii explained to Daniel.
"How old are you?"
She smiled at him, knowing he sensed the nearness of this milestone for her. "I will celebrate my 25th cycle in three weeks."
They sat in companionable silence for a time, watching the sun rise over the rocks beyond. She had never wanted to read someone’s mind without permission more. As if being rewarded for her patience, he vocalized what he had been thinking, "What will your choice be?"
"I have not yet found the one to whom I would give my life. Because of that, my choice seems to have been made for me. I will choose to dedicate my life in service at the temple of the ancestors."
Daniel thought for a moment before asking, "How can you know? How would you know you had found the one?"
Annalii was quick with an answer, "It is very simple for us. Because love pervades every part of us, we know immediately when we have met the one for us. There is a reaction, a physical and visible reaction between those two people as they meet for the first time."
"Amazing," was all Daniel could muster in response.
Annalii thought about the sparks that had flown the first time she touched Daniel. He would not know it, but the physical proof was there that she had met the one for whom she was destined. Yet this was all so new. Here was someone from another planet. How could she judge her reaction to him with the same standards as those she used for fellow Androsians?
Daniel broke into her thoughts to ask, "What will life in the temple be like?"
Annalii broke easily into a description of the life of a temple servant. "Prior to our 25th year, those who show interest in temple service are brought in to be trained. We are taught much about our history and our traditions."
