I was incredibly
interested at all of the specifics that are involved in the copyright laws. I
was also amazed that I have not ever heard most of those laws before. The
librarian at my school is very aware of copyright laws and works to enforce it
around the school. I have heard her speak a number of times about enforcing
copyright laws and she has hung posters at all of the copy machines in the
building. I find it fascinating that she has not given us more of the detailed
law. For instance, I have hear of the "fair use" portion of the law,
but didn't realize the 4 determining factors that define if "fair
use" can be applied. I think most educators, or at least the ones that I
have worked with translate that to be a blanket statement in the area of
education. I also found the list of
things not protected by copyright laws interesting. I had never thought of
symbols and designs as not being able to be copyrighted. I also was surprised
that titles, names, phrases, and slogans are not covered by this law, but by
another. Once again, I am surprised that
through all of my education and professional development that this has not been
more clearly spelled out as it was in this text. Copyright laws are definitely
addressed, but not to the extent to which they exist.
