Quest - Zurich?
After a brief, random stop in Ricterswill, where I emulate all the locals by simply hanging out at the lake, I head up to Zurich. Now, Zurich is about as far from the backpacking circuit as you can possibly get. It's expensive even for Switzerland, and that is saying quite a bit! I think I could live for a month in parts of Asia for the cost of a very modest lunch here. There is one, and only one, backpacking hostel, the egregious City Backpackers in the nightlife district (and we are being very generous here) known as the Niederdorf. The only entertainment is watching an American busker swallow swords, juggle fire, and ride around on his unicycle with a tourist on his shoulders.
The Zurich morning streets are as deserted as a ghost town. It's actually a bit eerie sometimes. Only until well into the afternoon could you find anything remotely resembling a bustle, and that would be over on the fou-fou shopping street of the Bahnhofstrasse.
The museums are all deserted as well, which suits me fine. Some, such as the Bellerive and the Gestaltung truly deserve to be deserted, but most of the others, particularly the Kunsthaus, the Rietbuerg, and the Swiss National Museum are great. The latter is huge, even for a European national museum, so two visits are necessary to see it.
On good weather days I visit the small botanic gardens, where I able to sneak up on a young fox who is intent on digging something out of a hole, or the surprisingly comprehensive succulent plant greenhouses. I go for a boat ride on the beautiful lake, included with the the transportation portion of the museum pass.
I'm hanging out here a bit because I'm waiting to hear from Tony about the best way to get to Prague. After I get word from him, I find I'm enjoying myself so I hang around a bit more. The older sections of town are surprisingly interesting. I wander up and down the hilly streets where Goethe, Georg Büchner and Lenin all lived within a stone's throw of each other. The Großmünster can always be found for orientation and even the Turkish scam artists are polite.
Staid? Perhaps a bit, but Zurich is a pretty nice town. Switzerland is empting my pockets though, so it's time to move on.
