Ramble Quest - Basel - In the Footsteps of Henning.

Tony heads back to Amsterdam and I jump on a night train (sneaking into a compartment) to Basel, Switzerland. If I hadn't heard my friend Henning tell everyone he meets for the first time that he grew up in a small German town close to Basel, I may have picked another introduction to Switzerland. However, now a pilgrimage seems mandatory.

Of course if I was truly doing Basel "in the footsteps of Henning" I would be visiting all the nightspots and seducing a pretty young girl or two. I have neither temperament nor inclination for this though and am here for a short peek and to get some logistics out of the way, namely the purchase of a Swiss half price train card to mitigate the shocking transportation costs, and the booking of a few hostels. Since accomodation costs are also off the charts here, the hostels, which are expensive enough for what they are, can sometimes be difficult to get in unannounced.

The Basel YHA, although picturesquely situated, is badly managed and hence, dirty and noisy. But Henning has always said good things about Basel and now I can agree with him. The Rhein river cuts through the center of town and it is well used by the populace on warm days, as nearly everyone seems to be either boating or swimming. When the swimmers aren't in the river, they are often splashing about in one of the many lovely old fountains.

The attractive Munster church sits above the river, offering a fine view. The town hall is wonderfully painted. Many of the buildings of the old town are interesting, particularly the post office. The Kunstmuseum is excellent and the small botanic gardens outside of the center are peaceful.

I'm able to get my tasks done and pay spiritual hommage to the HEN God of Wine. Now I'm ready for some hiking!
