This is home, and the primary area for my Historical and Genealogical research. The Mid Monongahela River Valley, known as the Mon Valley, has a rich history. The area served as a "gateway" for settlers on their way west, in the mid 1800's. Many stopped and decided that the area had all they were looking for, from rich farmlands on gently rolling hills, to a land rich in minerals, easy transportation, by river, or by land along the National Pike, which ran through the valley.
It is estimated that if everyone in the US would do their family trees, and had ancestors in the US during the 1800's, ONE HALF of them could trace their families thru this small area.
My direct ancestors came to the Mon Valley in the mid to late 1820's, and other relatives were here long before then.
The Mon Valley is located in south west Pennsylvania. If you are not familiar with the area, from the top (north) border of the map it is 8 miles to Pittsburgh, from the left (west ) boundry it is about 40 miles to Wheeling WV, and from the bottom (south) about 20 miles to Morgantown WV.
