48. Should human cloning be banned?

Nowadays, everybody knows that embryo cloning is asexual reproduction and that it produces indiviuals who are genetically identical to someone who already exists. But why is this topic of relevance to the present situation? What are the advantages and disadvantages of human cloning?

At first, it may seem to some people that embryo cloning is a horrible idea and perhaps our gut feelings may tell us that human cloning is wrong, but it is undoubtedly true that cloning makes a very important progress in medical science. There has been a breakthrough with human stem cells. Embryonic stem cells can be grown to produce organs or tissue to repair or replace damaged ones. Skin for burn victims, brain cells for the brain damaged and hearts, lungs, livers and kidneys could be produced. By combining this technology with human cloning technology, it may be possible to produce needed tissue for suffering people that will be free of rejection by their immune systems. Conditions such as Alzheimer`s disease, Parkinson`s disease, diabetes, heart failure and other problems may be made curable, if human cloning and its technology are not banned.

On another point of view, some may have a few reservations about murdering embryos. People who are against abortion at any stage are likely to have problems with human cloning. The process of cloning inevitably involves throwing away some fertilised embryos, and at the current stage of development many of the embryos selcted to live fail to develop and eventually die before birth. For example, to produce a single live cloned sheep called `Dolly`, scientists had to create over 200 sheep embryos; all but one died or were thrown away. Some people think that human cloning is a particularly cynical anti-life activity. Abortion kills embryos, but human cloning creates embryos knowing that most of them will be killed.

Nevertheless, I am of the opinion that human cloning does not hurt anyone. It does not hurt the person being cloned. If it would harm them they would not give their permission. Furthermore, it does not hurt the baby. Why sould he or she feel any different from a baby created in the convential way?

Finally, the most important aspect of human cloning, in my opinion, is the very important advance in medical science. It is irresponsible to ban human cloning considering the medical benefits. (394 words)

49. Recently I saw a report on TV about a two-year-old girl who died because her mother left her back in the car while she went shopping. It was a very hot day and after 25 minutes it got so hot in the car that the girl had to die. Her mother came back after about 50 minutes and after the first shock she said that she never thought such a tragedy could happen after 25 minutes.

In my opinion this woman has to be totally ignorant. How can I leave my child alone in a car? To leave a child in a car is even dangerous if it’s a day with temperate climate. The child could crawl around in the car, maybe loosen the brake or just cry for a very long time. But to leave a child in a car when it has about 35°C outside, is not only ignorant but also totally crazy. I myself wouldn’t even leave a dog back in a car for 10 minutes, so how can somebody leave a child in a car at all. In my opinion this woman has to be punished. She is responsible for the death of this child and certainly has to take the consequences. Of course somehow she isn’t only perpetrator but sacrifice, too, but I think this shouldn’t be taken into consideration in this case.

It happens very often that parents leave their babies and small children in their car in order to get a cigarette or to do some shopping. They want to be back very soon. But very easy you can get stuck in a long line at the check-out or get involved into a discussion with somebody. Very easy ten minutes can extend to twenty-five minutes. And twenty-five minutes were too long for this little girl.

I think that it should be forbidden to leave children alone in a car. Parents should have to pay a fine or something like that, if they get caught leaving their child back in the car. And I think that it is important that other people, e.g. passengers, who pass by a car in which a child is left alone, don’t hesitate to help the child out of the car. This might save the life of a child.
