String band music in the south has it's roots in many traditions, including those of the anglo saxon settlers and african americans. Music and fiddle styles evolved along different paths as the generations passed the traditions down, with this came regional styles. In different regions of the country, styles and tunes evolved under there own sets of influences. There is a distinct sound difference between early Georgia fiddle tunes and those of Kentucky.
With the coming of the invention of recording devices and victrolas the regional differences soon gave way. Musicians from all areas now had access to recorded music from other areas and styles began to intermingle. We can see a cross between Blues, Jazz, and early Hillbilly music of this era. What was once a form of music distinct to an area or community now was accessible by the many. From the mid 20's to the mid 30's there was an explosion of recorded Sting band music, perhaps one of the most popular forms of this era. This is the music that I most enjoy , there is an energy and excitement that it conveys, found nowhere else. Some great bands to listen to in this vain are the East Texas Seranaders, Clayton McMichen's Wildcats, and Uncle Dave Macon and his Fruit Jar Drinkers. There are also some great reissues of early Black String bands which have alot of jazz and blues influence. I'll be getting a list together of some of my all time favorites.
THE THREE STRIPPED GEARS=GEARS
The GEARS still get together from time to time to work on tunes. Alot of the tunes of late has been rags and waltzes. Rob Golan, our fiddler has put alot of energy, the last couple of years into the BLUES,we call him BLUE BOB. We all are living closer to each other for the first time in many years and hopes are that this will spawn a rebirth of sorts. Todd Woerner is our Banjo player and I play guitar and add vocals  Below are a couple of mp3 files of recent Gears music
