Countless intrepid and brave souls have circumnavigated this planet, on foot, on bicycles,on motorcycles, on horseback,4x4's, sailing craft, vans, alone or in convoys, both disabled and able-bodied.  Some have met tragedy, others triumph beyond their wildest dreams, but each has been an inspiration to the ones who followed.  These are my heroes, and these are their stories ...

Section 1 - Around the World
Drive Against Malaria - 300,000 miles - British explorer David Robertson and Julia Samuel's DAM mission takes his Land Rover through every country on the planet, on target to smash Emil and Liliana Schmidt's World Record for longest drive in a single vehicle - go online, donate a net.  It doesn't cost an arm and a leg (David lost those in an earlier motorcycle accident).  This is the guy who fired up my RTW fever.
The World By Road - 3 guys, 70,000 + miles, one Toyota 4x4, 90+ countries, 2 years, starting Feb 2007 - great website, watch their previous trips.  "Without the risks, you're a tourist, not a traveller" - Steve Bouey

The Longitude Expedition - 8 volunteers, 41,000 miles, 4 Land Rovers, 80 countries - trip finished Feb 2005 - read the archives, great shots - for Parkinsons.
The Latitude Expedition - 6 volunteers, 2 very old Land Rovers, 78 days - going East to West (China to UK - 1999)
A Fuel-Efficient RTW Drive - A couple drives around the world on 1300 litres of gas (petrol) !  25 countries, 18,500 miles, 24 fuel refills
Another Fuel-Efficent RTW Drive - This time in a VW Lupo TDI, 20,000 miles, 80 days at around 70 mpg
VWVagabonds - A young couple in a VW camper van, 60,000 miles  - around the world on a budget.  Great on details, costs, shipping, and tips.
First Walk Around The World - Dave Kunst walked 14,450 miles to return home to Minnesota (1970-1974).  His brother John was shot & killed by Afghan bandits.
Walk Around The World - British ex-paratrooper's incredible unbroken 36,000 mile walk around the globe.  Read Karl Bushby's incredible (did I say incredible ?) journal as he crosses the Darien gap out of Columbia "You wipe them (mosquitoes) like raindrops from your face and find yourself smeared in blood and dead insects"
Cycle Around the World - Alastair Humphreys : 60 countries, 46,000 miles.  Read his accounts of being pelted with stones through Ethiopia, and being teased with "You, You, You" by the street children.  And how he managed to "Keep the Wonder" as he squats for shits while being stared at by mobs of children.  Then buy the book !
On Horseback Around the World - On April 5, 2006, Californian cowboy Erzo Colley embarked on what appears an unplanned RTW with his two horses.  Not sure how he'll get into Australia with an animal, and likely no passport.   Still, this would be a first and very bold attempt. "Every time someone pulls off a first, people subconsiously realise that means there will be a better world for us" - Peter Diamandes
Three Men in a Hupp ! - 1910 - 1912, three Americans drive a Huppmobile 41,000 miles around the World, from Detroit to New York - the hard way !  Buy the book here ...
Two Men in a 1954 Packard Convertible ! - Don and Carl in 1997, New York - SF - Beijing - Paris, 12,000 miles, 60 days (more or less) - what a nostalgic journey, in a vintage car that need to pick up speed downhill to crest the next hill !
First Land Crossing of Darien Gap - and an 2nd too - dont miss their crossing of this 125-mile impassable jungle between Panama and Columbia in the 2-wheel drive Rokon Trail-Breaker motorcycle !  Part of Loren and Patricia Upton's North-South 5-year, 56,000 mile RTW drive, one of their many "grand romantic high adventures".  "If it doesn't work, dammit, make it work !".
