For sensitives, housing can be a huge challenge

As sensitivity to chemicals increases, those with MCS are forced to abandon cities and suburbs.

Ideally, we look for large and isolated tracts of land which still have access to shopping and other convienences. Small rural towns are ideal.

When looking for housing in rural areas, it's best to visit the various gathering points in the area and check bullitin boards at the local gas and grocery stores.

Many canary friendly options are not advertised anywhere else. Talking to local residents can often reveal an unused trailer home or farm outbuilding which may not be up to "code" but still available for rent and serve the intended purpose.

Temporary shelters like tents are the only option for many. It is common for sensitives to turn to friends or family for permission to set up camp in the back yard. Storage sheds can be converted into living quarters as another low budget solution.

Trailers and mobile homes are a more substantial and permanent solution after they have been decontaminated. Ones built before 1950 are in high demand due to the fact they were originally constructed with safe materials.

Sensitives with the means to remodel or build a home are also challenged by construction materials. Existing homes may be too contaminated to serve the purposes, forcing sensitives to build from scratch. The demand for canary friendly building materials is finally being answered as more and more safe products become available.
