Help with the holidays.

Holiday gathering

Yummy smells from tradtional recipies add their special fragrance to this time of year. Even surrounded by these wonderful odors, if someone three rooms away were to light a scented candle, "what's that smell?" would burst from anyone chemically sensitive.

The holidays are a time of celebrating personal traditions involving family, friends, and community but sensitives are torn between the desire to participate and the limitations of our condition. Fortunately, there's a well developed coping strategy.

Keep it simple.

Large numbers gathered together, especially in small or poorly ventilated areas, produce a lot of fumes from laundry chemicals, deodorants, shampoos, and the ever dreaded perfumes and colognes.

Those in the earlier MCS stages may tolerate exposure on an occasional basis, perhaps periodically stepping out for fresh air, but those with more advanced sensitivity face greater limitations. Significant preparation is needed.

If you wear a respirator mask or use other such equipment, be sure to bring it along.

Limit your exposure by focusing on only the most important events.

Travel in your own vehicle so you can arrive late, leave early and control the environment of your car.

Enjoy the holidays but most of all, stay safe!
