I am a student from Elon University currently majoring in elementary education
and a possible minor in psychology. I have always been very interested in teaching,
which has given me the opportunity to get involved with different teaching
experiences at an early age. Senior year in high school, I had an independent
study at one of the elementary schools where I would go a few times a week
and work with a second and third grade class. During the summers in high
school, I worked at a camp/school where the students have chance to see how
the next year is going to go for them. I worked with all ages, but my favorite
at the camp is first grade because they are actually learning math and writing.
I continue to work there over the summers during college, and soon I will be
teaching my own class there. These are great experiences that allowed me to
learn more about elementary education
before
seriously declaring
it as my
major.
Elon University has a great education
department and I am very lucky
to eventually receive my degree from here. Spring of my freshmen year I was
already getting hands-on experience in a classroom observing a fifth grade
teacher. The practicum led me to get involved with an after school program
called Project
Kids. It is an after school tutoring session for students that
are at-risk and need the extra attention in order to succeed. I continue to
gain experience through the job there and I enjoy working with the students
very much.
