After reading "Where the Red Fern Grows," we know that Native American Legend plays a key role in the understanding of the story. At the end of the novel, when Billy views the red fern, he comes to a new understanding of love. Also, once he understands, Billy finds comfort in the legend of the red fern.
Legends are the oldest forms of literature. Many cultures have used them to tell stories about nature, creation, and beginnings. These legends are then passed down from generation to generation in the form of the oral story.
Much of the Native American culture focuses on the legends' stories and teachings. Now, we are going to explore Native American legends and search for common characteristics between several stories.
Use the links provided to read at least THREE Native American legends. What characteristics do you notice about them? If you were a Native American youth asked to write a legend, what would you write about? What details must you include in your legend?
You should use the handout I have provided to help you discover a pattern in the legends you read.
Have fun and use your time wisely.
