Where in the U.S.A Are We?
In order to properly preview our next selection, we should begin by increasing our background knowledge.  First, we will begin learning about our novel, Where the Red Fern Grows, by looking into the novel's setting.
Setting Tasks:
Click on the links to help you complete the "Where in the USA Are They?" Worksheet.

1.  Locate the
Ozark Mountains, which are partly in Oklahoma, and label them on your map.  What other states are the mountains in besides Oklahoma?
2.  Using the resources from the library, locate the town of Tahlequah, Oklahom and label it on the map.
3.  Find Oklahoma on the
map of the U.S.A.  Is it north, south, east, or west of your state?
4.  Click on Oklahoma in the
map of the U.S.A.  Use this information to answer the following questions:
              a.  When did Oklahoma become a state?
              b.  What is Oklahoma's nickname?
              c.  What is Oklahoma's capital?
              d.  What is the origin of the name "Oklahoma"?
5.  Use the
map of the U.S.A. to locate the state of Idaho.  Compare Idaho to Oklahoma.  How are they similar?
6.  Look around the
official web page for the town of Tahlequah.  Find at least three interesting facts about the town.
