The Vinegar Tasters.

In this painting, from China's distant past, we see three men standing around a vat of pickle vinegar.

As each has touched their finger in for a taste -

Their expressions show reactions which are intended to reveal their attitude toward life.
.

*

Each of the three represent one of the three great philosophies of China.

The vinegar represents the distilate of life.

The expressions are intended to illustrate their attitude toward life reflected in how life tastes to them.

The three men represented are: Lao Tzu, Confucius, and Buddha.

Confucius has a sour look on his face, Buddha has a bitter expression but Lao Tzu is smiling.

The reason being:

To Confucious and Buddha - life needed fixing - so the sour and bitter expressions - but to Lao Tzu's Taoist point of view, sourness and bitterness come from not being able to see the true beauty of the interweavings of nature - resulting in a mind that cannot understand the true flow of the universe. Not too sour and not too bitter -

Life to the Taoist is balanced just right - with all of the unending flavours to choose from.
