Keitha, I also remember the candy bars on Fridays. The Look and Big Hunk candy
bars were popular. As I remember, you brought pomegranates. Do you remember Mr.
Bender sitting at his desk, leaning back in his chair and it and him falling
backwards? Playing ping pong after school. He was so much fun.

How wonderful for Mr. Bender to check in. He was one of my favorite teachers,
and have lots of fond memories of my sixth grade at Memorial. Still have a
project (notebook) somewhere in my attic stuff on South America that we did for
Geography. Of cours , in October, got to listen on the radio to the world
series--think it was the Dodgers and the Yankee's--wasn't it always those teams
in those days? Every Friday we got to eat a candy bar in class--a reward for
being good all week? And the friction (we hought) between Mr. B. and Ms.
Jernstedt (spelling). We always rooted for Mr. B. I don't remember anyone
referring to him as "old man Bender." It's great to know that he now
thinks of us fondly.

Dear Alarmist; I'm having trouble drawing from my memory bank, the connecting of

CLass of '58 very well. What a wonderful bunch of kids and I'm sure they are now
a wonderful group of Seni r Citizens. One amusing incident, I overheard some
students referring to me as "old man" Bender. It made me smile because
I was less than ten years older that they were. Jim Lee's address is: 4415
Cornwall St. West Linn, OR 97068 Sorry to have missed the class reunion, so many
people I'd have loved seeing and visiting with. It was nice of you to remember
me. Love, By Bender

How could we have known, when we left McMinnville, how far the threads would
stretch? When my oldest daughter went away to college, she worked for Connie the
entire four years she was away. When my youngest daughter did a bit of dancing,
there was Mary. It gave me some comfort, when my chics were leaving home, to
know these familiar peo le were there. One specific time, when my daughter was
fourteen and flying off to the unknown, there was Mary and some of her dance
protoges at the airport, heading to New York, I believe. She offered to take
Loreene under her wing if they were boarding the same fligh . It turned out that
she wasn’t, but you cannot imagine how gratifying it was.

Choir trip to Eugene - 11/18/00 17:03:08
Comments:
I think the trip to Eugene was our Senior year, when a lot of Oregon HS's
participated, each choir performed individually and was critiqued. That evening
they all came together to form one huge choir. Chester (who later acted in AMEN)
Harrison led us in singing his spirituals. Something wonderful happened during
that performance (his joy was infectious). After we sang the final song, he
turned to the audience and said something like---I have tr veled all over the
world conducting choirs and I want to tell you people here tonight; THIS was a
PERFORMANCE! During all the practices we had become pretty tired of the songs,
but when that man stepped in front of us that evening, he danced, he rolled his
eyes and we caught the spirit. During the performance, I can remember thinking I
had no idea AT ALL, if I wa singing on key or not, but in the joy of that song
(was it, Amen, Amen?)I didn't even care. When we returned to school and back to
normal, there was a day the Mr. Tjurnland left the room. Everyone was talking
quietly and sitting in their seats. A student wandered to the front of the
class, maybe to do something, then, began the lead in lines to the song and,
with complete accord we all responded with "Amen! Amen" He continued
the next li e and we continued to respond. Mr. Tjurnland walked back into the
room and his face was complete shock. I think he was astounded that we had done
this all spontaneously. The whole thing is one of my favorite memories. Always
was. Does anyone else remember?

Little effort involved. Turned it in to Mrs.Six, got it back with a Giant red C

said more with that red C than she could have with a thousand red marks. Best

impact. Frequently mentioned teachers that have touched the future have been
Anne Six and Jim Lee. Seems somewhere along the line calls should be made and
the impact made known. Reading your notes, your laudatory comments, led to mild
reflection and yes, there was a person that made a difference, but he was a
mentor at Portland State. Still a difference was made. Maybe if Six and Lee
around they would participate in the project. Anyone.....

The meaning of HS by: nostalgia 10/28/00 11:12 am Pondering and pondering, I
come up with one overriding feeling about 'why' the High School experience. I
come back to one devasting memory and feeling that it was to make Karen laugh.
You see, Karen cannot keep herself from laughing when someone falls down, rolls
down a hill, or skids across a floor on their butt, even if they are mortally
wounded. It was, it seems to me, my soul purpose in life, to go beyond the norm
amount of tumbles and fall quite often and always in the presence of Karen. It
was rushing to class with an armfull of books that went flying down the length
of the hall as I skidded flat on my stomach, or the great belly laugh she had
because I managed the impossible of "falling UP the stairs" and
numerous other completely humil ating falls. I suppose the most 'funny' (but
somehow I never saw it that way) was at the new, indoor pool, in swim suit with
the boys watching when my feet flew out from under me and I fell flat on my
back. She seemed to take particular delight in that one. I don't remember much
about text book learning in HS, but the memory of being on the ground with Karen
somewhere near laughing uproariously sticks in the memory. I only hope there was
a deeper meaning. anonymous, of coarse.

Nostalgia by: Larry 10/27/00 4:41 pm Surprising the use of the term nostalgia.
Guess many of us have had a bit of emotion in seeing the names, looking at the
faces, realizing the events of long ago, and (for me) finding you all and
hearing your voices again through your words. This experience, a virtual reunion
of sorts, but far, far more than that for me - a making of friendships here, a
delightful trove of humor there, and warmth in another place have been a
pleasure. Why it all happened - Vonda's vision and effort, Scott's unabashed
boosterism and daily good cheer, and Carole and Sondra in the background
providing a place we could touch when we did. Carole (and probably Sondra) was
inspiration for this. Well, you all take care and enjoy the nostalgia. My
younger brother John maintains my nostalgia is not longing for a place,
McMinnville, but rather for a time. He may have had it right. Cheers, Larry P.S.
I do so enjoy this site and your postings - all of them.
