The High School opened its doors to one class of 2nd graders
taking the overflow from all the Grade schools.

Remembrances of 2nd graders

The teacher asked every student to say their birth date at the beginning of the year. I didn't know when my birthday was so I made up a date.

I knew there was a 1 and a 2 in it so I took a guess--50/50 chance at getting that one right---and said the 12th. I didn't know too many months, so I just named one that I knew---February.

February 12th came around and the teacher had me stand in front of the room and everyone sang
Happy Birthday.

That wasn't the worst of it. She decided to have a Valentine Party and said that all the girls whose birthdays were in the month of February would be the Valentine princesses.

I wanted to be a princess, so I didn't tell her the truth.

But, I felt very, very guilty.

There came a day when the teacher went down the line and asked each student what they wanted to be when they grew up. The boys gave various answers, but the girls were all answering, "Nurse".

I suppose it was a sign of the times, and also, we wanted to NOT be different so we just copied the first girl's answer.

When it came my turn, I was too weak-willed to say what I really wanted to be, and answered, "Nurse".

The question and answer continued on through the rows, until one bold little girl answered, "Cowgirl".

Sheesh! I wish Ida said that.

Another second grader and I were attending Cook school.

When we were told that we were being transferred to the High School we held hands and jumped up and down (We were children).

The teacher asked us why we were so glad and if we were so unhappy in her class. We both said, "NO! But our brothers go to the High School."

Apparently, we were thrilled to be near our older brothers.
