The News... continued
Left:  Visiting one of the public jails in Rio Preto (5 hrs. north of SP).  These jails are used to hold alleged inmates while their cases are being processed.  The jails are in poor condition, are usually double capacity, and dont provide the inmates with the basic rights that  the law provides for the inmates in federal prisons (ie: health care, work, reduced sentence incentives).  Because of over-crowding in the entire judicial system, some of the women in this jail had been serving time for 1 yr. 10 mo. without even being sentenced.
Right:  The view through the bars into one of the cells of a jail in Rio Preto.  This cell had 6 singel bunks and was holding 10 women.
There are also a few other projects that I am interested in right now.  One working with women in prostitution which involves meeting the women on the streets and talking to them about the health and support program available at the project.  Also, there is a recycling project that I will be looking at which works with street people.  This project helps organize the recyclers to increase the income they receive from the recyclables they collect.  It also has a branch that produces art from some of the recycled materials.  More to come on these projects in the next update...
And finally, just a quick word on life in So Paulo:

**Its cold here right now, in fact
were in the middle of winter (15 C). Without indoor heating, its like sitting in a refrigerator inside the apartment.

**The
World Cup has been fascinating, both because I love soccer and because its a singular cultural event here in Brazil.  Unfortunately, Brazil lost to France in the quarter finals today, and yes, I saw grown men crying in the streets!

**During this past month, the Catholic church managed to squeeze the celebration of three major saints into one month: Anthony, John, and Peter.
Brazilians celebrate these three saints by eating lots and lots of corn. (Dont ask me how this tradition developed...) Remember the scene in Forest Gump where Forest is being regaled with all the different kinds of shrimp dishes?  Well, substitute corn and youll understand the menu for the month of June!  Everything from corn juice right up to corn ice cream!!
Thanks for reading this update of my thoughts and happenings in Brazil.  Please also check out the
