Misen-San

Although there are many attractions on the shore, within easy walking distance of the ferry port, my favourite part of Miyajima was Misen-san, the island's central mountain.

Quite apart from the verdant scenery and breathtaking view, after 4 months living in Osaka, it was nice to get some fresh air and quiet.

A lone woman, climbing the steps to a Shinto shrine.

I imagine that when the Japanese tourist board are putting together a new brochure, this place is probably the first stop on their photographic itinerary.

The "easy" way to ascend Misen-San: a 2km cable-car arrangement, called "The Ropeway."

The whole arrangement seemed a bit rickety and I enlivened the journey by bouncing around in my car and making it rock. At times like this, it's easy to understand why I often travel alone.

Although I was disappointed by the absence of feral monkeys (which were advertised, by the way) the fantastic view of the sea from atop the mountain was a pretty good second prize.
This is on the look-out tower at the mountain's summit.

I was tired, I was cold; it was also starting to snow, but the early start and the hard work felt pretty worthwhile.

Next challenge, get back to Osaka and get loaded up.
