Ecumenical Christmas Service

30 November 2002

Charmaine and I attended the ecumenical service at the St. James Anglican Church in Jalan Ipoh on 30 November 2002. The service started at 6pm and ended at 8:30pm. Lovely supper was provided after the service.

The St. James Anglican Church is very different from the Catholic churches I've been to so far. I counted about 10 air-conditioners, about 20 ceiling fans and several wall fans in the church. The knee-rests at the pews were cushioned.

The service themed "Because of Christmas, We Have the Gift of Hope", was organised by the Wilayah and Selangor Regional Committee of the Council of Churches of Malaysia. Among the participating churches included the Anglican Diocese of West Malaysia, the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Malaysia, the Mar Thoma Church, the Roman Catholic Church, the Orthodox Syrian Church and the Methodist Church.

The choirs from the Zion Lutheran Church (Brickfields), St. Joseph's Church (Sentul), St. Anthony's Church, St. Thomas Mar Thoma Syrian Church (KL), Good Shepherd Church (Setapak), Stepping Stones Children's Home and St. James Church (Sentul) were very good. Hearing their melodious voices, one could not help but to be swept away into the Christmas mood of peace and goodwill to all.

Offertory collection was to be channeled to Stepping Stones and Bangsaria Day Care and Training Centre.

Stepping Stones is fully-residential home for battered wives, widows, single mothers and children who are abused, abandoned, neglected or rejected. It was established in September 1998 by Pastor Johnson Rajahser.
