THE WANNABEES

After the Mining Town Cowboys bit the dust, Wayne, Irit and I set about scraping together a new band. Mark (my old ex-Fakawi friend) joined in on drums and we recruited Michelle Constant (who attended UCT with me) as second vocalist. The name Wannabees was eventually agreed on, after much deliberation. Incidentally, at this stage, the name was not yet so publicly associated with teen Madonna fans!

The band only played twice - at Dawsons Hotel, backing Green and The Electric Petals - which immediately highlighted certain serious problems - the logistical flaws of swapping instruments in mid-set being one and the mismatching of the two vocalists' voices being another. For my money, the only real highlight was a thrash version of These Boots Were Made for Walkin' . But it was fast becoming clear that the interpersonal dynamics of the band weren't working and, it was soon thereafter that Mark, Michelle and Irit put on their boots ... and walked.
