Summary: The effect of heroin on the lives of a group of Scottish friends is documented, based on the novel by Irvine Welsh with a hip soundtrack.

Ewans Thoughts: It was the kind of part you dont read often, and it was exactly the part that I personally felt I wanted to play at the time. I was looking for the part of Mark Renton and there it was even better than I could have hoped for, because John Hodge is such a brilliant writer.

Christinas Review: Having lost 30 pounds for the role of Renton, Ewan truly looks the part of the gaunt junkie in this disturbing yet sometimes darkly comic movie about the perils of drug addiction. The movie succeeds at portraying the dismal hopelessness of a junkie's life without ever becoming a preachy "Just Say No" anti-drug campaign. The range of emotions that Ewan displays, from the blissful highs to his unbearable screams during withdrawal, makes this the role that is perhaps his greatest acting achievement.
