| Summary: In a galaxy far, far away, a young Anakin Skywalker meets his destiny as two Jedi knights and a young Queen are forced to land on the desolate planet of Tatooine. Ewan Says: Theres nothing cooler than being a Jedi Knight. Christina Says: This movie has taken a lot of slack for being too kiddy-oriented and Jar Jar Binks has become perhaps the most maligned movie character of all times. However, as a long-time (and one of the more obsessive) Star Wars fan, this movie was still a magical experience for me. Star Wars just has this special quality; it manages to transport me back to my childhood every time I watch it. I still get giddy when I see the Death Star blow up, still doubt that Luke will get out in time, even though Ive seen him do it 100 times before. And although The Phantom Menace has its flaws, so do the originals, when seen from that movie critic point of view. Sure the dialogue is cheesy, the acting will never win an Academy Award, and the hairstyles can be laughable (Cinnamon buns are cool!), but while I watch, none of this is on my mind just because of the fun, captivating and magical experience of the film. And Episode 1 did just that for me, in spite of Mannequin Skywalker and Jar Jar. The pod race and Jedi duel are among the highlights of any of the movies, and Ewan is simply wonderful, if a bit under-used, as the young Obi-Wan Kenobi. Ill be the first to admit that I hope Episode 2 is even darker and more ominous than The Empire Strikes Back, but Episode 1 is a very promising return to that galaxy far, far away. |
