A Secret to Hold Close Chapter Eleven Mylies bright gold eyes looked up, startled, as she heard her name called. A nurse stood by the door of the examination room that Mylie and her sister Jessica had been waiting in while the tests were being processed. Test that would ultimately tell her if the cancer that she thought was gone had actually come back. Tests that would change her life forever because if the leukemia was indeed back there was little chance of her surviving another battle with it. She sighed and her fair sister came and sat beside her on the examination table, pulling her into a one armed hug. Mylie I wish that I could say everything is going to be alright and that it wont come back. I wish that I could promise you that. But I cant and knowing that is killing me! Not being able to protect you is killing me! Mylies unshed tears glistened in her unusual gold eyes, ones that matched the unshed tears in her sisters blue ones. I know you do Jess. God! I wish I could promise myself a happy ending Mylie paused, trying not to choke on the lump that was in her throat. She had never really talked about the possibility of dying the whole time she had been sick before. It was like her family didnt want to bring up something that horrible and she hadnt wanted to jinx it so it just hadnt ever been talked about. Jess, I wish I could promise that I would be here forever. That I could be there on your wedding day and when my first niece or nephew is born and that we could just grow old together but I have to face the facts. And that means that we have to talk about what might happen. She paused again, Jess I might die this time. No! her sister whispered fiercely, No! Mylie thats not going to happen. Youre going to get through this fine, just like last time! Mylie looked at her sister her gold eyes dull and bleak, and said quietly, Jess. I dont know if I can handle going through all those treatments again I dont know if I want to go through all those treatments again Jess pulled her sister into a tight hug, Mylie please! Dont give up now! You might now be sick again! You might But before Jess could say anymore there was a knock on the door. The two sisters looked at each other for a split second and then Mylie said, Come in please. Dr. Jackson came in and took a seat across from the two sisters. He was a lot different from Dr. Blake in every sense but Mylie found she was somehow comfortable in his presence. He was a lot younger then Mylies normal doctor and his dark hair and eyes, as well as his quiet manner, made him seem dark and mysterious. Sorry for the delay Mylie. We have your results back... he paused and glanced up at her with his almost-black eyes. It was then, not with words but with his eyes, Mylie found out. Im sick again arent I? she said, her eyes and her spirit dull. Continue |
