A Secret to Hold Close Chapter Ten Mylie woke up the next morning in a great mood because of wonderful dreams. She stretched and glanced over at her sister who was still asleep. Slipping out of bed she tiptoed over to her bag and pulled out her planner before creeping into the living room area of their hotel apartment, careful to shut the door behind her so she wouldnt wake up Jess. She picked up the receiver and the first number she called was the room service to order them breakfast. She settled the receiver back in its holder and then paused. After a moment she took a deep breath and then with a shaky hand she flipped through the planner until she found the number she was looking for. Yet another pause and another deep breath and then she started to reach out for the receiver. It was then she noticed her hands were shaking and she frowned, squeezing them into fists to try and stop the quivers. Once she had gotten the worst of the shakes down she reached for the phone again and dialed the number for the specialist that Dr. Blake had referred her to while she was on her dream trip. She listened as it rang twice and then a woman answered it, Dr. Richard Jacksons office. This is Janet, how may I help you today? Mylie closed her eyes for a second and then said, Hi my name is Mylie Larson and I was a patient of Dr. Jason Blake. I was given Dr. Jacksons number for if something were to go wrong while I was on vacation and I feel that I need to come in for an appointment. Mylie heard the assistant shuffle through a book and then her tone changed from bored to alert. Yes, Miss. Larson, of course well get you the most convenient appointment available. When would be the soonest that you would be able to get here? Mylie didnt know what had caused her change of tone but she was grateful and she had a feeling it had something to do with Dr. Blake. I am free to come in anytime this morning. How about 12:00? That sounds fine. Mylie wrote down the directions that Janet gave her and then said, Thanks a lot Janet. I will make sure to be on time since I am asking for such a short notice appointment. Its fine dear. Well see you then. Mylie set the phone down in its cradle and then jumped as her sister said, Well? When do we need to get to your appointment? Mylie turned to find her sister leaning against the bedroom doorway. She didnt want to get emotional right now because she wasnt even sure if she was sick again, so she said quickly, My appointments at 12:00 this morning before changing the subject, I ordered breakfast and its on its way up. Im going to go hop in the shower so if you could just get the food when it comes. Jess shot Mylie a studied look but followed her cue kept the conversation light, Sure just make sure not to use all the hot water! Mylie laughed at one of their oldest inside jokes and gave her sister a grateful look before headed to the bathroom. When she got out she could smell the food so she hurried and threw some jeans and one of her favorite band tees on before joining her sister to eat. Once the food was devoured Mylie finished her hair and make up and then plopped down in front of the TV while Jess showered and dressed herself. When both sisters were finally ready, although a little early, they grabbed their purses and started towards the door planning at looking at some shops along the way. Mylie was laughing at something Jess said as she opened the door and came face to face with Danny! Oh! Hi Danny! I thought I said I would give you a call when I was done this morning He smiled, not noticing her slightly peeved tone of voice, Yeah but I thought I would surprise you. It was then that Mylie noticed the bouquet of flowers in his hands. Thanks Danny, theyre beautiful! Wait those are for me right? Jess just smiled and headed back into the apartment to give them some privacy. He laughed and held them out, Of course they are. I just saw them and for some reason they just seemed to say you wow that didnt sound as cheesy when I said it in my head. Mylie laughed and lifted them to her noise. It was then she saw what kind of flowers they were and she turned white as the flowers were. Mylie? Is something the matter? Jess head shot around the corner, worried that her sister was having another dizzy spell. And Mylie quickly said, more to her sister then to Danny, No, no Im fine! Really! Do you want to come in while I put them in some water? Sure. Mylie let him in, very glad that both her and her sister were clean freaks as the apartment looked fantastic. Wow this is a really nice place! Danny said, impressed. Thanks. The kitchen is this way. If you want something to drink there should be something in the refrigerator. She got out a vase and slid the flowers into it. She frowned as she arranged them. The bouquet was made of two types of white flowers, chrysanthemums and orange mocks. For some odd reason she happened to remember the meaning of these two flowers from some paper she had to do back in high school and that knowledge is what spooked her when she had first seen them. Orange mock stood for deceit while chrysanthemums meant truth. So I havent told Danny the whole truth but that doesnt mean Ive deceived him, right? But should I tell him the truth? I mean, I will be gone in another week and out of his life. Its not like we could ever have anything other then a fun fling while Im here because there is no way a relationship would work over an oceans distance apart. Its better to just not tell him about my cancer, that way it doesnt add complications to anything that we might have. We both have fun and then I go home and have a fantastic story to tell my children if I live long enough to have children and the cancer doesnt make me infertile. Mylie sighed, hating that she had to worry about such things at a young age. Is something wrong? Danny asked. She turned to him and placed a smile on her lips, No, nothing is the matter Danny. Its just really sweet of you to bring me flowers. Mylie glanced at her watch and said, Im sorry Danny but I got to go. Ive got an appointment that I have to get to at noon. Can I still give you a call after Im done? Well how about I give you a ride to where ever you have to go? he suggested. No! Mylie exclaimed a little too suddenly. Um, you cant. I mean, just It would just work out better if I met up with you after, ok? She caught the confused look that Danny shot her way at how fast she had turned down his offer and her horrible excuse that followed. Sure, if that is what you want he said a little puzzled. Thanks, Im sorry I cant explain better Its fine Danny said, Its probably none of my business anyway. Mylie didnt say anything and just kept her eyes on her hands. She glanced at her watch and saw what time it was. Ive really got to be going, Danny, but I would like to do something after, ok? Yeah, me too. Just give me a call. Mylie walked him to the door and after he had left she slid to the floor with her back to the door. Jess I just screwed that up didnt I? No I dont think you ruined the whole thing now he just thinks youre a nut job! Jess joked, trying to lighten her sisters mood. Ha ha ha! Very funny! Mylie said sarcastically. The two sisters then left the apartment and gave James the directions to the doctors office when the reached the car. The ride over to Dr. Jacksons office was a silent one as Mylie stared out the window lost in her own thoughts Back |
