A Secret to Hold Close
Chapter Five

"Susan! I haven't seen you in a while!" The red-headed nurse smiled back. Mylie had become used to her way of suddenly appearing in places and the lady had become a really good friend. It seemed every time Mylie's spirits were really low Susan showed up with a word of comfort or understand that helped Mylie through it.

"Yeah I've been really busy lately" came the reply.

That was another thing Mylie had accepted about Susan. She was always vague about what she did the rest of the time she wasn't around. Mylie had only gotten her to talk about it once and the only thing she would say was, "I have plenty of charges that I have to take care of and sometimes it takes me all over the world." When Mylie had tried to get her to explain father the mysterious red head just smiled and changed the topic.

The red head grinned and moved beside Mylie. "How does it feel to know that you have that many people that love you?"

Mylie shifted uncomfortably as she glanced down at her hands. "I don't know about love. I know they care about me and that is all that matters."

Susan sighed, "Mylie, you going to have to learn to accept love sometime. And it might help if you say it."

Mylie glared at her, "I do say love." Susan gave her a measuring look and Mylie sighed know that Susan, as usual say through her. "Fine your right. I don't really say it often enough, but is that such a big deal?"

Susan didn't say anything for a minute and then quietly said, "Yes Mylie it is. There will come a point in your life where choosing to say it can help you keep a love that you will need."

"But I feel like..." Mylie paused, not quiet sure how to say what she was feeling.

"You feel like you are giving away part of yourself?" Susan said. As always she was able to put into words what Mylie was feeling.

"Yeah, I'm afraid that if I do then I will get hurt or that I might even hurt the other person."

"But Mylie that is what makes relationship grow and strengthen is working through problems like that. 'True love will always prospers'." The nurse quoted.

"Maybe" was all Mylie said but Susan didn't press the issue. It was like she knew that she had placed the seed of the idea in Mylie's heart.

"You better get back to the party, Mylie, but please think about what we talked about. I have a feeling that you will need it soon for this trip."

"Do you know anything about who donated it? And don't you want to come meet everyone?" Mylie asked but Susan just smiled and shook her head.

"I might but it's not my place to say. I would love to but I've got to visit some other charges. But don't worry I will make sure to come and see you when you're in England. I have some charges over there."

Mylie gave the red-head a hug and stepped back inside but when she was only a few steps back in she remembered something that she forgot to say. She ducked her head back outside but as usual Susan had vanished.

Mylie shook her head slightly with a smile and headed back into the party. The party lasted until all the hospital workers, doctors and nurses had to get back to their rounds. Patients were returned to their rooms but nobody left without saying goodbye to Mylie and wishing her luck on her trip. Mylie stayed until the only people left were Paul, Emily, her family and Dr. Blake.

"I think it is time to get you home." Mylie's mom commented as she caught her daughter trying to stifle yet another yawn.

Mylie smiled and nodded her agreement, "Yeah, sounds good. I don't think this day could have gotten any better."

"We also need to get you packed for your trip" her mom said with a grin.

Mylie turned to Paul and Emily. "Oh yeah I was wondering when do I leave for this trip?"

They smiled and Paul said, "In a week if that's not too soon."

"I don't know if I can even wait that a long!" Mylie said.

They said their goodbyes and with a few last hugs they all headed home. Mylie was asleep as soon as her head hit the pillow but the next few days were a frenzy of packing and buying stuff for her trip. The night before she and Jess were supposed to leave for their trip she lay in bed and her last thought before she fell asleep was Tomorrow is going to be amazing...
