A Secret to Hold Close Chapter Two Mylie shifted in the hospital bed, making the darn thing squeak yet again, and she groaned. She was having trouble sleeping. Everything was so different from home. The bed, the cold, the noise of the night nurses moving around. She sighed again. Ok so Im not going to lie to myself. Im nervous; tomorrow I am going in for the stem cell transplant surgery. God, everything changed so fast And everything had. Ever since she had gotten her diagnosis, it felt like she had been caught in a whirl wind of activity. Mostly by choice. Mylie didnt want to slow down, every time she did the truth of what really happen caught up with her. She knew that she had plenty of people to talk to but something made her hold back from everyone that was trying to help and love her. Her parents, her sisters, everyone Mylie changed her position again and was rewarded with another long moan from the bed. She closed her extraordinary golden eyes, trying to force herself to sleep, when she heard the knob on her door twist. She turned to see who it was and a bright red head peeking around the door. Mylie? Hi my names Susan. Im one of the night nurses. She came into the room and Mylie could now see her hospital scrubs with little angels on them. Susan held a blood pressure cuff in her hand. I didnt want to wake you but I heard some noises so I was coming to check on you. Do you mind? She held out the cuff and Mylie extended her arm in response. Susan stepped forward and with practiced ease had the cuff in place and was soon writing down her findings in Mylies chart at the end of her bed. She gave Mylie a smile and started out the room but there was something about the red headed lady that made Mylie call out, Wait! Would you mind sitting with me for a little while? I mean if you dont have anyone else to take care of. I just dont want to be alone right now. Sure. Ive covered all my other charges for a while. You have me for as long as you need me. Susan shifted a chair from over in the corner and plopped herself into in. This feels nice. Im on the run all day long and I dont get to sit and rest much. Mylie just smiled slightly but then asked in a small voice, Susan Hahave you ever seen anyone like me before? I mean, with my condition? Susan gave Mylie an understanding look. She knew that Mylie wasnt the type that wanted to hear lies or even half truths. No Mylie I havent but I know that this hospital has some of the best doctors and nurses, she gave a little half bow while still sitting, which made Kylie giggle, that I know of. If anyone can help you, it is this hospital. You just need to have hope. Faith in yourself, that your body can overcome this, and faith in the people that love you. It will all get better, I just know it. Thank you. Was all Mylie said and all that she really needed too. Susans words seemed to install a small flicker of hope and belief in Mylies heart. Susan just took Mylies hand in hers and waited till the girl fell asleep before slipping her hand out of Mylies slack grip. The red headed lady gave a loving, older sister look down at Mylie and placed a light kiss on her forehead. This girl is special. She will get through this and most of all find the thing that she has been avoiding her whole life true love Sarah studied the faint smile on Mylies face and found a similar one had taken place on hers. I have to go check on my other charges she thought with a sigh and with that final thought a faint glow surrounded her and then next minute she had disappeared Mylie woke up the next morning to the sun streaming though the window of her hospital room. She felt better then she had in days, both physically and emotionally, and when her mom and dad came in the room she was smiling and she seemed to be lit from the inside with a glow, although her mother figured it could be a trick of the light from the window. They shared a hopeful glance and Mylie saw it. Mom, Dad, I just want to say Im sorry. They both protested at the same time. Oh honey you have nothing to be sorry about! (from her mother) Mylie I dont know what youre talking about! (her father) She held up a hand to silence them both, No I do. I havent been the most open with yall. I know that you are here for me and you dont how much I need that. Its just that when I found out about the leukemia I thought that by putting up a wall between us that I could keep it from hurting, for the both of us, if something were to happen to me. But I got some really good advice last night and I realized that I cant get through this without you. So please, forgive me, I need you. As she had talked she felt the tears rise up inside but instead of suppressing them she let herself cry for the first time since she found out about her disease. Her parents instantly went to her side and enveloped her in a hug. Her mother spoke first, Mylie we understand. We are always going to be here for you. No matter what! You understand? Mylie still crying into her mothers shoulder, nodded her head. Her parents let her cry out all the tears that she had been holding in the last couple of weeks. When Mylie pulled back, her face red from crying, her mother smiled, Let me get a cold wash cloth for your face. You dont want to look all red and blotchy. Mylie looked at her mother curiously, Is someone coming to see me or something? Her mother flushed, like she had said something she shouldnt have, and said, No one other then you sisters. They are going to come right after school, before your surgery. Jess wanted to be here when you get out of surgery. The mention of her sister made forget about her moms strange behavior. Jess was the oldest of the three Larson daughters, with Mylie as the middle child and Emma following up as the youngest. The Larson girls might look as different as night and day but they acted exactly the same and had one of the best relationships possible for sisters to have. Jess had gotten the blond hair and blue eyes from their mother as was thought of as the true beauty out of the three daughters. Mylie had her fathers dark hair color with the brunette hair and naturally tan skin, only enhanced by her constant time out in the sun but her gold eyes were unique to only her. Emma was then odd ball in the family with the shock of red hair and bright emerald eyes. Not long after her parents showed up a nurse came in to take Mylies vitals. As the lady strapped the blood pressure cuff around Mylies upper arm the girl asked, Um there was a nurse that did my check last night. Her name was Susan. I was wondering if you could let her know that I would like her to meet my parents. The nurse shot her a funny look and said, Um last time I checked there wasnt a Susan working last night but I can check and let you know. Mylie nodded and gave the nurse a quiet thanks as she left the room. Hmmmm, thats interesting Mylie thought but her next thoughts were interrupted by a gentle knock on her door Back |
