              The Intercom is an indispensable in an organisation for the communication between various officials . For  that they have to install Telephone set for each terminal and EPBX(Electronic Private Branch Exchange).And there is also overhead involved in this for maintenance .EPBX is an exchange which routes the call to appropriate Destination. In this Traditional intercom system there are chance of Failure and there is requirement of technician to rectify such problems. When there is need for enhancement ,we have to afford more cost .

                     More ever the cable should be laid between  each terminal.The cable may be Co-axial cable or Fibre optics cable and this also requires maintenance. To over come this disadvantages, a new approach to Inter-communication is designed by the technocrats here. In this way, voice is transmitted as Digital signal unlike in traditional Intercom in which the voice is transmitted as Analog signals.

                  Mostly Every organisation has Computers connected  with each other to share the resources. In this approach we are using the existing computers for the Intercommunication . One computer acts as a server which routes the call and each terminal is a computer system which is attached with Microphone and Head Phone. Here we need not to lay separate cable as the computers itself have connected through UTP(Unshielded Twisted Pair) in a LAN (Local Area Network)

             A lot of facilities is provided in this Project. Call forwarding facility is one  in which the incoming call to a particular Terminal is forwarded  to another terminal. Message facility is incorporated with this package, so that message can be transmitted from one terminal to other terminal and the message is broadcasted to all the terminals. Along with the voice video is also transmitted.Thus video conferencing can be done with in a enterprise using LAN.Missed call facility and auto answering facility is added with this package .

           Java is used as programming language for this project as it is platform independent and it is robust. UDP(User Datagram Protocol), TCP(Transmission control Protocol), RTP(Real time Transport Protocol) are the Protocols used to transmit the packets over network.

            So  it is a boon to the enterprises which has very good computer resources. The enterprise need not to establish separate devices and cables ,Instead they can utilize their existing LAN and computers for communication with in that campus.

       The enhancement is difficult in traditional intercom system ,because it involves hardware upgradation and it is costly. But here any enhancement can be done at the software level and it is cheaper.
