STILL WATERS RUN DEEP

What I Believe: I believe in the ability of all people to grow and progress and to become more than what they are. After being in the Army, working in a prison, writing for a newspaper and magazine, teaching Music in the public schools, I've seen the best and worst of life, and just I believe in the capability of an individual to succeed. I am a Christian like my descendants before me. But, I am not an evangelical Christian. I believe in the God-given right of every individual to choose where he wants to be, what he wants to believe, and how he chooses to contribute to society.

I am worried about some of the oppression I see by members of the federal government (like Newt Gingrich), but believe in the capability of a plurality to overcome its shortcomings. I believe that Americans and my family on the whole are basically prejudice, and need to re-examine their beliefs and the rights of others of different races, ethnic groups, religions, and cultures. My mother and father hate the fact that I am LDS, by the way. But, oh well, it's my life, and I will live it as I choose.

I think that all students in every school in this nation need to take courses in Multicultural Diversity and Ethics in combination so that they know how to interact so that, for example, someone in all White rural North Dakota can relate as intelligently with all peoples they encounter as someone who lives in wealthy, well-educated Waltham, Massachusetts. Personally, I am not too bad off as far as related to others of differing ethnicities and culture. I need to learn how to speak Spanish better, and I need to be able to read the literature and Science of other nations. I need to humble myself more and really look at the prejudices I do have some more. In general, I just need to learn more about everything. Having differing points of views towards people is an everchanging and ever-existing process, and one I can't deny.
