| Religion and Clothes The majority of the Libyan people belong to the Muslim religion. One major Muslim holiday is Eid al-Fitr, which comes at the end of Ramadan the month of fasting. During this holiday Muslims refrain from eating or drinking during daylight hours; in order to reflect on God and on the plight of the less fortunate who have no food to eat. Another major holiday is Eid al-Adha, which celebrates the willingness of Abraham to follow all of God's wishes even sacrifice his oldest son. In Libyan cities both traditional and modern western clothes are worn, such as blue jeans and t-shirts. However you will usually see the Libyan nomads of the desert dress in the traditional clothing. The women wear a veil that covers their face, partly because of the tradition that only their husbands and family should see their face. The veil also keeps the sun out of their eyes and protects them from sand storms. A Dush-Dash is a casual gown worn around the house by women. The traditional clothes of the men are usually just a robe and turban. |
