Notes:
There were
a few interesting things to look at here, drug abuse, drug shopping, violence
in the schools, and whether there is a level playing field when a rich
defendant is accused of killing a poor or middle class person. The
character played by Kathleen Turner was brilliant. She tried to
manipulate the system, but did so in an elegant way. Her confrontation in
court against Jack was terrific, and I loved the final scene with them well
dressed in their coats and hats. You always have to wonder if the rich
and well connected can away with more than compared to one without all those
means. But Jack once again got the jury to focus on the crime and not the
excuses.
It was
great to see Dr. Olivet once again interviewing the boy. I have a sense
she will be flying solo from now on as the in-house shrink. I would like
to see Dr. Huang there once in a while, but he's probably busy with the huge
SVU caseload. A bit of a problem here was that Dr. Olivet didn't testify
on the stand. That seemed to be a bit odd considering the defense shrink
did.
Here where
I live, there has been a recent rash of school related violence or threatened
violence. Just last week, two schools had incidents where students
brought in a gun. Another had a student making a bomb threat. Then
on the same day that this ep appeared, a student was sentenced to three years
for slashing another student with a box cutter. I'll stop right here so
as to not further depress you. However, you should get my point that
school violence continues to be a big problem six years after Columbine.
Unfortunately, this will be ample material for Mr. Wolf and company to use in
future eps for the franchise.
With
Kathleen Turner on as a guest star, it appears that the original is now trying
to vie with SVU for the most star power. I hope this sort of race doesn't
water down the quality of the product. She was terrific though and would
be welcomed to come back.
